Windows 7 & Windows XP Sharing

I know it's like the 100th thread about this. But I've tried everything I'm capable of and cannot solve this problem.

My computer is using Windows 7, and my brother's one is XP. I have video files that I need to transfer from his to mine (in RAR format). But the problem is Windows 7 nor XP detect each others PC's. I have gone to advanced setting and turn off password, also made sure my adapter settings are right. When I try to create a HomeGroup, I select what I want to share, click next but it says 'Windows cannot setup HomeGroup on this computer'. When I go to my Network I only see my PC, not his. When I go network places on his one, it only shows his docs.

I would appreciate some help.

A HomeGroup is only for sharing between Windows 7 machines.

If you want to connect with an XP machine you have to make sure that both are in the same Workgroup.
To check the Workgroup on a Windows 7 machine, go to Control Panel -> System and Security, and click on System. There you'll see a section with 'Computer name, domain, and workgroup settings'. Make sure the name of the workgroup is the same as on the XP machine.

(After changing Workgroup sometimes you have to reboot both machines before they 'see' eachother on the network. On occasion even multiple reboots are needed to make it work. I've always found Windows networking to be rather finicky.)
