Change your DNS Servers in your router

I had speed problems too, in a different network (Brighthouse in Orlando, FL... they resell Road Runner). I had a really slow connection and I remember at the time somebody complaining about RR DNS servers. The advise at the time was to replace them with OpenDNS servers (OpenDNS | Internet Navigation And Security), which I did and that took care of the problem.

Right now I have the same problem again because I moved and ordered the "home networking" kit, which included Brighthouse own router (I left the old one at my previous home as a gift... big mistake!). So first thing I do is to try to change the DNS servers in the router... and find out that it can't be done.

So I decided, o.k., maybe they fixed their DNS. They did not. I have a slow connection and worse, I get disconnected about four times per day. I called brighthouse customer support line and got escalated to Roadrunner support. First thing they do is tell me that I may have a signal problem (I tell them my laptop is four feet away from the wireless router).

Never mind, they ask to get into my router, and they change the wireless security protocol from WPA to WEP. They completely ignore the information I gave them about "DNS servers not responding", they reset the router to factory default and tell me to try that and call them again if it keeps happening.

So next time it happens I call them again and plead with them to change the DNS servers on the router and they say they can't do it. I ask that instead of the "home networking kit" can I just get a regular cable modem and I will will my own router and they say that yes, I can have that... and it will know a few dollars from my monthly bill.

So now I'm waiting for UPS to bring me a new router I purchased in amazon and I will return the "home networking kit" crap to brighthouse ASAP. So... in short, get inside your router, change the DNS servers... and let us know how it wors...
