    W7 cannot see workgroup computers

Ok, I've done my best due diligence this afternoon and am crying "UNCLE!!"

My W7 machine cannot see other workgroup computers (a vista laptop and a linux box). The vista laptop CAN see the other two, can access files on the linux box, but i get the error "network path not found" when trying to explore the W7 box. I'm using a trendnet tew 632 wireless router the the linux box is wired to, the vista laptop and W7 box are wirelessly connected (there is a linksys range expander used as well). Web connection is fine.

I have not created a "homegroup". I have created the same "workgroup" for all computers. I have enabled network discovery and file sharing with no passwords. I can ping the linux box and the laptop from the W7 machine no problem. I beleieve i have enabled all appropriate services.

The Linksys WMP110 RangePlus Wireless PCI Adapter has the current driver, proper NIC's are enabled (i think thats the right term), and i enabled netBios over tcp/ip.

Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated!!

I don't believe he ever created a homegroup in the first place.

Can you reach the network shares using the UNC?

    like \\Win7 computer\Share_Name

Forget Homegroup as you have 3 machines with 3 different OSs. I think the best way to start looking at this issue, is to check the ipconfigs of the machines (not a lunix person so i wouldn't know much about that).

For vista and w7, show us the ipconfig details please.

I have seen too many people who relies too much on workgroups/homegroups just to do simple things as file sharing...why?

I'm pretty sure he means "Workgroup" as in NetBIOS.

Thanks for the assistance!! is there a more basic way to share files and do remote desktop? I was under the impression that you had to have a "workgroup" declared for all computers. btw, i have no "homegroup" created in W7.

Here is the ipconfig for the W7 machine:

from your Vista box, can you address the Win7 shares by IP address? This will help narrow things down.

    From the vista laptop..
    \\192.168.10.103\share name

As surfasb stated. But have your shares been shared out correctly and what username/password to use.

See my File Sharing Tut in my sig. XP or vista, don't matter the principle is the same.

    Hey folks,

Sorry for the tardy reply... Well, I'm not sure what happened. I used "Windows 7 Manager" to optimize my system, and now the W7 machine can access the linux box without issue. Go figure...

Still can't get remote desktop to work though. router is configured on port 3389, W7 firewall is configured to allow outgoing connections on domain and public on all ports. The error message I get is that the remote computer is not configured, is not on, etc... I do have RDC enabled on the linux box, allow control, password, etc. so i don't know really what else may be going on.

    Thanks for your help!
