Check out this thread, as you scroll down it talks about specific settings on the Mac that might help. I wouldn't give up either until all possible work arounds have been tried.
Networking with a mac

It may work if you just type in "Guest" with no password. There are a few things that work but apparently not too well.

Works fine for me.
When you connect manually(smb://iphere) and it asks for password, just select Guest.
