Static IP problems within Win 7 Home Premium

Hi Guys,

Firstly, great forums, loads of useful stuff on here, but I am still learning about networking, so please bear with me and don't flame me; thats the reason why I didn't get any help on the other forumns.

If I can, I shall explain my issue:

1. I want to create a static IP on my desktop
2. I have assigned the correct IP (within IP range of router)
3. Subnet mask and default gateway are 100%
4. Have tried using both the routers IP and the correct DNS addresses from my ISP with no luck

After I have validated the settings, cmd shows the IP I have assigned, but I get the little yellow warning triangle on the network icon in taskbar, and no network access as it says 'unidentified network'.

Having asked Windows to automatically fix, it is saying that the DHCP was disabled - would this be on my WNR2000 Netgear router or on my IP settings?

I think it is something fundamentally silly I'm doing, but I cannot pinpoint it. I even followed the static IP guide on www.portforward.com to the letter, but still no joy.

Could this be a router setting that I am missing?

Hope you guys can help, I'm actually loving 7 at the mo, in fact I'm 100% glad I purchased a copy, unlike others I know ....

Hope you can help, cos I'd really like to learn more about networking etc. on 7, but I have reached a little plateau with this issue at the moment.

May I ask you what is your routers IP Address please 192.168.?.1

how many computers are you trying to hook up with static IPs.

are you planning on doing any sharing as well

and do all of your computers have windows 7 or are you running vista and/or xp home/professional

Hi Rob and welcome

An ipconfig /all output screenshot would be helpful..

Also try ipconfig /flushdns followed by ipconfig /renew

My router is indeed a secured 192.168.1.1, with only my desktop as a static IP, the wireless laptop is auto, and I believe the PS3 is too.

The laptop is XP Pro SP3, and my PC that I want as static is 7 Home Premium.

I was wondering if it was indeed the Netgear WNR2000 causing the problem cos 7 keeps telling me that DHCP is disabled when I apply the static IP

This could fundamentally be a router not able to determine the Mac address of the adapter of the desktop which is trying to obtain IP automatically. Usually if the modem and router are set to auto-config DHCP, anything attached to the router be it via wireless or wired, should be able to obtain IPs and access the internet IF the router's MAC clone option is enabled. Manually setting IP and putting in DNS have proven to also not work on this basis.

Ipconfig renew and flushdns will not work IF the machines are behind the router, and the router doesn't know the MAC addresses of the adapters.

Do I have to use the PC's mac address on the router settings then?

For some reason, the netgear router will not connect corectly, so I will have to try a manual download / update later on, but there is a newer firmware available...

mine is 1.2.0.8 i believe with the new one 1.3.x.x
