Hey, just installed R2 on my home network. States the computer can't join a homegroup. I'm guessing it's a limitation of the server. After all, if you have a server in your LAN environment, you usually don't want bother with home groups.
I guess we will see when the RC comes out if they decide to fix this error
I wouldnt call it an error, windows server should be used with active directory. Its what it was designed to be used with. If you dont want active directory then why are you running the server OS?
If its not an error then why is it built into the OS(being windows server 2008 R2) to begin with. It is an error and it will probably be fixed in the RC. i have a feeling this will also the the core of the new windows home server so i assume that's why its there.
Hey ccatlett1984,
Here are just few example of WHY we would want to run homegroup rather than a AD domain and still use server 2008 R2.
1. Media Services
2. Hyper-V
If I want to run it in a homegroup, all the power to me, right. The option is there, why would MS have it there if it wern't intended for something useful?
Need I say more?
I completely understand your point. I work with AD 2008 on a daily basis in a quite large organization 8000 users and 10000 PC's across 105 locations, so I understand your point. Howeever, I do quite a few small jobs on the sides, and a a domain is just too complex for for a non-technical small business owner. The homegroup is a perfect solution for that, in addition, I do a lot of testing at home, building, rebuilding, etc, etc. It is a pain in the butt if I have to build a domain everytime.
Anyway, media service is a package that MS released as a add on role that has to be download and installed, etc etc. I am going to try to use it to serve up my divx movies through media center with the hulu or secondrun.tv plug-in's for my media center. PS- The option to add the server to the home group disappeared when I installed Hyper-V, I am thinking ti is because it is sharing a NIC.:)

I am running ALL Windows 7 on my 5 home computers plus my work laptop and so far so good. Home group is a bit buggy but I will let you know what I find after it is installed. I have a feeling it is a local sec pol authentication issue.
