    network trouble

im trying to hook up a 4 port hub so that my wife can be wired into my office at the house. the modem will not recognize the router. what am i doing wrong. i had at one time, a wireless router and a 4 port hub working and then 1 day i come home from work and nothing. now i cant even get the wired router hub to connect my wifes and mine in the same room, much less the wireless router for the kids at the other end of the house. can someone pleeaassee help. this is driving me nuts. i am totally lost to how this could work fine one day and not even function the next. mine is the only one working now and it is wired directly to the modem.

Is it a hub or a router, there is a difference. If router what setting have your configured it with? auto-config-DHCP, Static IP, PPPoP etc?

it says that it is an etherfast cable/dsl router with 4-port switch. i went and bought a new wireless g broadband router with speed booster. both of my kids have wireless g pci adapters. i buy all linksys and use network magic to tie it together. like i said in my other post, it worked one day and the next, nothing.i tried resetting everything and still nothing. hopefully the new router will work.

my wife has the laptop, i built my own desktop. i just scrubbed hers and reformatted it to ntfs. it is an acer aspire and i think the partitions were bumping heads with a few of the programs. so i just erased everything and put xp on the whole thing without any partition. it will connect, but after 30 mins. or so, it disconnects. i also dont understand why it doesnt show on my network magic map. my 2 kids show on it. this new wireless router i bought seems to be a hub also, because it has ports to hook up to. it is the wireless-g broadband router w/ speedbooster mod. # WRT54GS2. not that i mind, cuz i was starting to get about waist high in all the hardware that was piling up. do you know if i put open dns on it, if that might smooth some things out?

It's not a hub, it's a router. Hubs are dumb devices that rarely gives you grief. So your wife laptop now has XP, and when you plug it in the router, you cannot get internet access?

Before you do anything, check if all the devices in Device Manager (on her laptop) are ok. That is no yellow exclamation marks.

Do a ipconfig /all on her machine and from your machine, try and ping her IP address. What do you get when you ping?

it will let her get to msn page and then puts her working offline, how and why does it do that? apparently its being knocked off the internet somehow.
