Losing network connection, winsock memory problem?

I've been having this problem ever since switching this computer from windows xp pro 32bit to windows 7 pro 64 bit, and I did a clean install, not an upgrade.

After a while my computer loses its connection to the network, I can't load web pages, check email, open my router configuration, or share files on my laptop. The laptop has windows xp 32bit on it, and it does not lose its connection when this happens, and can still access the router and everything, but it can't access the shared files on the problem computer.

When my connection is lost, I don't get any error messages in the event log, and if I try using the network troubleshooting and repair stuff it doesn't fix the problem, and the only thing it says is that there's a problem and it can't connect to the microsoft server that it checks the connection with. But, if I open up my email program, it tells me "not enough memory to initialize winsock driver". So far the only way I can fix it is to reboot.

This happens through normal use of the computer, just typical web browsing and stuff like that after several hours, but if I am playing an online game, like Second Life, it happens much sooner.



Things I've tried...

I tried setting the network card to not let windows turn it off, and changed all the other power settings to maximum performance.

I've updated every driver to the most recent windows 7 64bit version that I can find, for every piece of hardware, and my windows updates are up to date.

I also tried a tool for repairing winsock, lsp, and the tcpip stack.


Any ideas on what else can be done to fix this?

Thanks, but I've actually been to that page and tried the things there a few weeks ago. I tried them again though, just in case. I noticed that before and after resetting the winsock catalog that I don't have the MSAFD NetBIOS entries at all.

This sounds like more of the Nvidia chipset connection problem to me.
Try this, install the new 15.51 Nvidia drivers. Then go to the nvidia control panel --> networking ---> Change Ethernet Configuration ---> Receive Side Scaling = disable, not everyone has the Recieve side scaling feature so this may not work for you.

To show RSS state go to command prompt icon right click pick run as administrator type this in netsh interface tcp show global press enter. This will show u if RSS is enable or disabled.

You can also use the command prompt for this by typing into an elevated command prompt, netsh interface tcp set global rss=disabled Then press enter.

You could also try the newer 15.53 Nvidia drivers.

Thanks for this one too, I'm giving the rss setting a try. After a lot of searching I found some programmer's manual for that broadcom ethernet controller and it implies that the version I have doesn't have that rss, so hopefully this fixes it.

Unfortunately the rss setting didn't solve it. I'll try the 15.53 drivers, but this dell motherboard doesn't actually use a nvidia network controller from what I can tell. I tried uninstalling the network driver and making having it try loading the one from that nvidia set by itself but it didn't recognize it. The nvidia control panel doesn't have the ethernet configuration page you mentioned either, and where in the "software versions" it says "not reported" for nvidia networking.

Any other ideas on what I can try?

From what I read about this problem with the 680i chipset, the Vista 64 eithernet driver 67.89 may work the best. No guarantee's but this was all I could find.

unpack exe into directories(default is C:\nvidia)
open device manager and browse to network adaptors
properties on newtork controller
update driver , I will search myself , have disk , point into "c:\15.25_nforce_winvista64_international_whql\Ethernet" or wherever you unpacked it..

I'm also curious, what brand and model number of router are you using?

The network adapter won't accept an nvidia driver, it'll only take the broadcom one. Like I said, this is a dell motherboard, it just has the nvidia 680i chipset, but it has different stuff on it from an actual nvidia 680i nforce board.

I'm using the 12.2.2.1 windows 7 x64 broadcom driver for the network adapter. It's the only one they've released for windows 7 so far. The microsoft one is a version 1.0.1.0 or something like that. There are some vista x64 ones I could maybe try.

This router is a dlink dir-655 A3. The firmware is 1.32NA, I updated this just the other day from the original which was 1.02 or something. There is an emulator thing that you can play with if you want to see all the configuration stuff for it.
