    Zoom Wireless-n on Windows 7

I'm running a Toshiba 1905-S301 laptop (2 gig speed, 1 gig mem, 300 gig hd) with Windows 7 (32 bit) I thought I'd try the Zoom 4411 wireless-n USB adapter. It works great and I have the advertised transfer speed (54) for using on a USB 1.1 port.

My problem happens when I shut down Windows when the adapter is plugged in. A few seconds after the normal shutdown sequence begins I get a blue screen showing a system minidump. It never goes into shutdown, but instead reboots and brings up Windows 7 again with the failure noted as an unexpected shutdown sequence. If I pull the adapter and then go for a shutdown the process takes longer than usual (over a minute vice 15 seconds), but it eventually completes the shutdown and doesn't reboot on its own. Nothing appears to not work after the reboot and I can reacquire a network connection with the Zoom device any time I want.

Booting and shutting down with the adapter never installed is normal. An interesting failure, but one I'd like to eliminate.

We're going to need the details of the BSOD to help you further.

This is what printed out on the screen after the reboot from the BSOD. That screen passed by so quickly I barely saw that there was a dump going on.

    Problem Signature
    Event: Blue Screen
    OS: 6.1.7600.2.0.0.768.3
    ID: 1033

    Additional Information
    BC Code: 18
    BCP1: 00000000
    BCP2: 866E9278
    BCP3: 00000002
    BCP4: FFFFFFFF

    OS Version: 6_1_7600
    Service Pack: 0_0
    Product 768_1

    Files That Help Describe
    C\WINDOWS\MINIDUMP\020410-44133-01.DMP
    C:\USERS\JOHN\APPDATA\LOCAL\TMP\WER-79163-0.SYSDATA.XML

I have access to the minidump file above, but I couldn't find the .XML in the TMP directory. The TMP directory didn't even exist. Would you like the minidump?

I took a picture of the BSOD and copied its text. Note that this only happens when I select shutdown. Hibernate works correctly. Here it is:

A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

If this is the first time you’ve seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check to be sure you have adequate disk space. If a driver is identified in the stop message, disable the driver or check with the manufacturer for driver updates. Try changing video adapters.

Check with your hardware vendor for any BIOS updates. Disable BIOS memory options such as cashing of shadowing. If you need to use Safe mode to remove or disable components , restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanced Startup Options, and then select Safe mode.

    Technical Information:

    *** STOP: 0x0000007E (0xC0000005,0x82C80904,0x8AF67AC0,0x8AF676A0)

    Ultimate Solution

I solved the puzzel with a rather unique method. I took the laptop to the back yard. Just a little past the tree line. I set it gently down, took about ten paces away and raised my shotgun. Now I have no more problems with this laptop.
