The W7 PS2 KVM Switch and the Unicorn

Until recently I've been happy with W7 but have just installed the retail version (up from the RC 7100) and am having big problems switching my KVM switch.

It appears that the full release is too smart for its own good. It will only "remember" resolutions if one's KVM switch passes on all the info regarding connected devices.
As a consequence (and after many days of searching) I now have a luxury car that can only turn right by doing three left turns.

There is a switch made by ConnectPRO that works correctly with W7 but it is USB and I need a 4-port PS2 switch. Having searched extensively, I've come to the conclusion that such a switch simply doesn't exist.

The ConnectPRO UR-14+ model with USB DDM technology, which provides true USB device mapping to each connected device WILL work with W7 machines but this is only a solution for those with USB connections. The DDM patented technology is the ONLY reliable solution that I've managed to find for sharing a keyboard and mouse among Windows 7 systems and nobody makes a KVM switch for PS2 with this technology.

I'm beginning to wish that I could get a refund for the two W7 Ultimate Retail packs that I bought and switch to Linux.

Microsoft are no help. They just tell me to buy a new KVM with DDM ("Dynamic Device Mapping") but that would mean switching 4 PCs from PS2 to USB and buying a very expensive switch. They don't give any information about how one might switch off the "dynamism" of W7 via a reg tweak and they just don't seem to care that their bright shiny new OS doesn't support legacy technology of the simplest order.

Many others are having problems with their W7 machines suffering this "resolution identity" problem when using KVM switches and there are threads all over the web from bewildered people answered by well-intentioned folk offering mostly misleading information.

After a long search I can put the matter to rest (I believe). For existing PS2 KVM set-ups Windows 7 is a very bad idea. Other than to spend a lot of money on new hardware there doesn't seem to be any solution.

If I'm wrong (as I often am) then please let me know. I'd just love to be wrong in this case.

OK. I've found a solution for my particular scenario and it may help others so here it is.

It seems I may be wrong and "KVM wobbly monitor syndrome" might have more to do with EDID than DDM. This means that it may not be an MS problem at all but rather (as some have suggested) a problem with ATI graphics cards.

After setting my resolution, I stopped and then turned off a service called "AMD External Event Utility". This seems to have stopped the system from detecting my monitor dismounting every time I switch PCs with the KVM. This service can also be called "ATI External Event Utility" depending on one's card.

I don't get any flickering resolution identity problems any more and the KVM now works just the way it did with XP. Hope this helps someone.
