Renaming a network connection? Problem

Hi guys,

Just installed W7 Home Basic today and not had a problem so far but i have a little annoyance that i hope i can fix.

Please see the attachment image where you see in ipconfig it says Wireless Network Connection 2, but in Network & Sharing Center it clearly says Wireless Network Connection.

At first i tried going through registry and finding anything that said Wireless Network Connection 2, and changed it to just Wireless Network Connection which seems to of partly worked as its now displayed right in the Network & Sharing Center but the actual network adapter when using ipconfig still shows 2, can i fix this?

Thanks guys.

Actually, check if the "Wireless Network connection 2" might be the Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter. If you are using your normal 11/a/b/g adapter, it should not be that.

Here is more information about setting up your home network: Setting up a home network. You don't mention the specifics of what you are trying to do. Make sure your hardware is compatible, drivers are updated and you set up your network for the computers you have.

I can change my connection name in ipconfig just by changing the name in my Network Connections like the first picture is showing. Just highlight the connection and choose the "Rename this connection" tab.

Is that all you are trying to do?

You can see that the connection names match up with my ipconfig and I can change them at will.

fixed it by uninstalling my adaptor, reboot and reinstall then went to registry and deleted the key for Wireless Network Connection and rebooted then it allowed me to rename.

Now i dont have a key in registry but does not seem to cause an issue...

thx again
