w7 RC: cannot connect to internet..no default gateway

    Hello all,

Well it started yesturday when I got home. I couldnt connect to the internet, tried restarting everything (pc, modem and router) and still nothing. It says "identifiying...no network access" the whole time on the bottom. Roommates all connect wirelessly perfectly (embarrassingly im supposed to be the computer person) and wired to the one that would be going to my pc.

I also have a asus mobo with "express gate" so when I boot up I can use the mobo and software on the HD to access the internet (which works, so I know that my hardware is fine) but when I boot into w7 it doesnt let me connect! These problems started last night!

This morning I need to check something for school, did a system restore to 2/4 and still didnt work.

I tried following https://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/18203-internet-troubleshooting-guide.html and ipconfig/all, noticed I have a IPv4 (says preferred after the ip), subnet mask, dns servers, but no default gateway to continue the tutorial.

I then hard reset my router and still wouldnt work. Im out of ideas now. I dont have a dvd drive anymore so dont know if I can reinstall windows (dont have time now have a test tommorow!) so any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

    Thanks in advanced!

    Also note:
In internet options, the lan settings are set to auto connect.
    Windows firewall is off
I uninstalled AVG thinking it had something to do with it

If it has been working and then all of a sudden bang!, could be some updates to the system. Have you tried doing a system restore to prior date?

First thing to check is that you can browse to your router. Check to see that you can at least see it. Then check that your PC is on the same subnet as your room mates, and what your router says it should be on. Check to see that your router is not blocking your mac address.

Try bypassing the router and hook your network cable directly to your internet modem ( cable, DSL, etc). Make sure you have your network card settings to auto for IPV4.

Are you sure about the drivers for your network card? Does your motherboard have two Ethernet ports? Is one ( or both ) disabled?

That's about all I can think of off the top of my head.

Have you tried manually configuring the IP address, subnet, gateway, and DNS? If it's a desktop and will always be wired to the router, I recommend a static IP address anyway.

Is your adapter set yo auto detect Ip? check that it is, if it's set to manual IP, what are the default gate entry?

It could be someone has changed the router's local IP (192.168.1.1, it should be this as the gateway is the first IP of your network).

You can also check your mate's adapter setup, manual or auto detect IP.

Hello Jeff, thanks for the reply,

I cannot browze to the router (browser to 192.168.1.1) it shows same screen that cant connect. the rest of that paragraph i dont understand unfortunately.
(ALSO NOTE: ROOMMATES ONLY HAVE MACS)

I tried straight to router, didnt work. Even reset everything in every possible combination.

My mobo has one connection, it is currently enabled. I have disabled it and enabled it tons of times.

    keep the suggestions coming please!

No I have not. But will try. Can you post the link to a tutorial (or i will find one and update this post to ask you if thats the correct method)? Thanks

Setting Up a Static IP Address in Windows 7
This explains setting IP, but can you set subnet, gateway and dns?

Did you say you are wired to router? Have you looked at your cable to your pc from the router, Unconnect it from both and have a good look. Maybe been chewed on by a pet, just an idea, good luck to you with this problem, And welcome to SF
