    folder restrictions


    okay everyone, I'm having a number of issues with win7 networking, XP machines no longer connect, window 7 machines stop showinf in the the network browser but are still connected and have access to the network.

    but now, and this is really 'pushing my buttons'.......I cannot restrict users from folders.
    We are in a work environment where we have confidential data and don't want our employees to see it. We had the restrictions working great, but now win 7 has decided to share the whole lot with everyone! WTF????????????

    The folder in question resides on a shared drive, and I have had user rights for just those who should have access to it and this has worked fine, until today.

    I have even set it to share with nobody, but still everyone has full access to it.

    PLEASE HELP.

    Is it just me or is win7 networking just a piece of........

    OMG...no sooner had I posted the message then I found the anwer, Win7 on the data server had changed all the user accounts to administrators!!!!!! how the heck could that happen?

    gotta say I'm close to pulling the pin on win7, while I love it generally, the networking side of things is just insanely stupid. The amount of time and cost to our business because of networking issues is getting out of hand.

    We've installed win7 on every computer several times to try and sort it but each time problems arise (and generally different them the previous install).

    Please Microsoft...the bells and whistles is all very nice BUT I JUST WANT MY COMPUTERS TO CONNECT TO EACH OTHER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    This is NOT a Windows 7 issue. If you don't understand how networking works it seems confusing and frustrating. Windows 7 works perfectly with networking in fact the underlying part of it is almost exactly the same as Windows XP, but do to public outcry in how hard it was to set up a network in Windows XP Microsoft made it extremely easy in Windows 7. If you select HOME network the install assumes a HOME network and everything is available to everyone. If you select WORK then they assume you know how to setup a network and will share what you want with whom.

    I have many Windows 7 machines on a HOME network and they work perfectly and as expected. (Different locations and staff)

    I have many Windows 7 machines on a WORK network and they work perfectly and as expected when I setup all the permissions, groups, accounts etc. (Many Many locations and staff)

    Windows 7 is different than Windows XP for a WORK or HOME network in that you need to make other security changes when you change from the default settings. Windows XP was basically the same settings every time for either a home or a work network. Understanding how Windows 7 network works is a big step in getting a network to go beyond the default settings.

    The book “Windows 7 Inside/Out” Microsoft Press is an excellent book on networking.

    hmmmm....I never had user prefrences change in win XP...never, period!

    A big statement to say win 7 networking works perfectly, given the thousands of posst on the net re problems and issues, I don't think perfect is quite acurate.

    I'm stoked that it's working great for you, but please don't imply I don't know what I am doing simply because I am having problems. Perhaps if you explain the all users suddenly having admin rights issue I have experienced rather then just saying 'it works'

    I wasn't implying you didn't know how networking works; I meant it as a general statement. -- Sometimes when reading just the words it is hard to read the inflections. I take some of the advice I read personally too...Sorry if that sounded like it was direct to you. Sometimes I explain things and it READS poorly, again that is not how I meant it.

    Point well taken Windows 7 Networking is not perfect.
