very slow ftp uploads when they work

    Hi all.
I've looked at other ftp posts on here and this problem doesn't seem to have been found by anyone else.

I'm on a new system with windows 7 home and my ftp uploads are stupidly slow when they work and half the time they don't work.

I've tried using filezilla, core ftp, the command line and an online uploader all with the same results.

Up until last weekend all was fine and all of a sudden it is not.

Does anyone know what I can check to see where the problem is?

If I use my laptop - which has vista on it - the uploads work perfectly within seconds. Using my desktop with w7 I am having the problems. If an upload does work it takes around 20 secs to upload a 1k file. I am using the same router for both pc's and exactly the same software version for my firewall, anti virus, spyware etc...The only difference as far as I can see is my OS.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

    extra info

i just noticed that ftp downloads are not working at all on my w7 machine. as with the uploads they work with no problem on my vista pc.

    forgot to say it's:
    w7 home 64 bit
    i5 2.66 hz
    4gb
    ati 5700
    netgear wg111v2
    bitdefender total security 2010
    spybot s&d

hope this is enough info. the config was fine last week. no hardware changes since then so guess it's something about w7

Sounds to me like a problem with either the security software and or network drivers.
Windows itself would not interfere with FTP.

device manager reports no issues with the drivers.

the security software is the same as the one i am using on my vista machine. i got multiple licences for it so the version and updates on both are the same.

earlier in the week i did a system restore to before installing alien vs predator just to see if this had done anything to the system and the ftp transfers worked as they should. when i rebooted the next day. it stopped working again.

Screenshots below are the firewall rules for filezilla.

try disabling your startup programs in msconfig, then test...

Disable all of them or one by one?

i would disable all of them... if your speeds increase, you can begin to add them back one by one till you find the offending entry..

All startup items disabled has made no difference to the transfers.

Downloads failing everytime and uploads working some of the time.

Apart from ftp uploads and downloads, how is the rest of your internet based usage?
