Only firefox's working plus can't install any updates

Hye,it's my first time posting a thread here,i really need help with my problem, its almost been a month now.
    I'm using windows 7 professional.
I'm not sure what's wrong with my connection,it says it's connected but the only internet based program i can use is Firefox.
I can't use Internet Explorer,Yahoo Messenger,Windows Live Messenger or any other program that uses the internet which also means i can't update any programs on my computer..windows update, antivirus programs. It's really starting to piss me off.
I've tried almost every solution i can think of and what i've read on the internet like system restore,antivirus/malware scans, winsock reset,ip reset, etc.

I even uninstalled programs that i thought was causing the problem. Please help me,i don't think formatting my computer is the best solution.
I'm a student and currently using a home network shared by 7 users, but every time i try using another connection the problem still exists.
Plus i can't transfer any files with bluetooth,i'm not sure if that's realted in any way though.

Sorry for all the whining n stuff, your help will greatly be appreciated :)
    Thanks in advance

You may want to take a look at your Windows Internet settings see if the proxy support is turned on. It may have gotten turned on by someone not knowing what it is. All the Microsoft programs will follow that setting but FireFox won't. I don't know if Yahoo messenger does though.

    Just a thought...

    Thanks for the advice man.
But I've tried that before and triple checked to see if it was on.
    Don't think that's the problem.

Do you think it has to do anything with the registry?
I remember this problem started when i installed the pc game Prototype.
The game didn't detect my usb joystick so i went to a forum and they said i had to rename a file on the registry but it didn't have anything to do with the internet keys.
I renamed a key under the current control set i think.

Later i uninstalled the game and when i rebooted my system, the freakin internet gets all messed up..

Ouch, At this point you may want to see if a system restore point will work or you could try a repair.

If you post the full path to the registry key you changed, someone here with a "clean" install can tell you what the value should be and maybe you can just put simply change it back?

I this there was one other person that had this issue. Here is the fix for him.

Only Firefox can connect to the internet! Quick read

    Go into

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings]

Change the value of "ProxyEnable" and set it to "0".
