Advice required on wireless connection please

Hi Everyone'
This is my first post so I hope I dont make a hash of it lol

I am running Windows 7- 64 bit desktop
Have just purchased a new Linksys router WRT160 N v3 as my old one seems to die intermitently.

My problem is I cannot seem to connect to the 'wireless' connection only receive internet on wired connection.

I also want to add my Laptop Widows Vista- 32bit to make a home network.

Im a little thick sorry but do I need to purchase a wireless adapter?

Previously I used my laptop on my old linksys router 'wireless' no adapter as the laptop has the card or whatever internally.

I have only just bought my desktop 3 weeks ago and this has the correct wireless connection internally (I hope)

After trying for the best part of this week Im at a loss as I keep getting error saying cannot connect to 'wireless' etc
My signal says exellent so not sure whats going on.

As I say Im a little rusty unless things a written down then I follow ok lol

If I do need an adapter would I need one for both desktop & Laptop?

Did you run the installation disk that came with the Linksys to setup the router and configure it?

Woops sorry I seem to have posted in the wrong place I appologise.

Yes I have run the disk loads of times. Each time I delete the available networks so that I have a clean slate lol

Hello mitzie, and welcome to Windows Seven Forums!

All you have to do is ask some of these young "wiper-snapers" around here and they will tell you it drives them nuts waiting for an old guy like me to get to the point. So we shouldn't have any difficulty getting you up and running. Lets just take it one step at a time, OK?

If you need confirmation that your laptop and desktop are able to connect wirelessly, just let us know the make and model number, something we can lookup the specs with the manufacturer.

Wireless can be a little tricky, more settings than a wired connection, but I think if we first get Internet access for you through the router, then we can finish with setting up your simple home network. I have a couple of 7s, XPs, and Ubuntus all happily coexisting on my home network, so it can be done.

First, please choose which computer, desktop or laptop, you want to start with and let me know?

I have now managed to get internet connection on my desktop pc. Mind you I logged on this afternoon and it had all vanished and I had to re install the router again! but as of now I am in contact with the www. lol.

Right Desktop is Packard Bell one two M D 6020 UK running Windows 7 64 BIT.

Laptop is Toshiba Equium A200-1VO model number PSAF5E-002005KS
Running Windows Vista 32 BIT

The Router is Linksy WRT160 N v 3

I really appreciate your help with this. Im afraid I am only self taught regards PC's and there working, so I am a little rusty at times.

If so both are wireless and the Toshiba is wired, which is good for you. It is especially important, should you ever need to update the firmware of the router, that you be connected by wire. Otherwise, it is easier to make changes in the router if you are connected by wire, so can you connect the Toshiba to the router with a network cable?

Next: Wireless technology continues to be updated. The current popular standard is "G", the next generation of wireless standards is "N". Your router and desktop are both "N", the Toshiba is "G". I have read that mixing "G" and "N" can sometimes cause problems, so we will need to remember that when we get to that point. Your possible options are to use the "G" standard for all your devices. I do not think you would notice any performance loss? Or you might consider your next purchase to be a Wireless "N" adapter for the Toshiba, allowing for all to use "N". I would suggest for you to look to see if Toshiba offers a "N" adapter for your model. Replacing the internal (built-in module) is not hard in many cases. I will also look to see if it can be done. Other choices might be an add-on card or usb modem.

If you can connect the router and Toshiba with a cable, I want you to log in to the router (have you done this already?). You will open a browser, example: IE or FireFox, and type: 192.168.1.1 into the web address bar. A log-in screen will appear, and if you have not already changed the user name and password, leave the name blank and type the password: admin Feel free to look around, click all of the tabs to see what is there.

Please let me know if you are able to get this far?

Lol yes it is MITZIE a slight spelling error there.

I have not been around as I have been ill. However im almost back to normal again.

I have now managed to connect my Desktop to wired Internet & Laptop to wireless. With so much help from you I am at present a happy bunny again.

I intend to stay around here as these forums are Sooo helpful and you are all so patient lol

I hope one day that I can offer help to someone but you never know eh lol!
