Can't connect to the internet on Windows 7

I just got a new computer with windows 7. It automatically joined my home nework (so cool!) and I was able to view shared files on the already-established-and-working home network. (So no problems with cords or cables.) However, I have NOT been able to connect to the internet. The other computers on the network are abe to connect to the internet without a problem, so I don't think it's a problem with the hardware. (The other computers are XP and Vista - this is the first Windows 7 in the house.)

Does anyone know why this would happen?

Hi new2win7! Welcome to SevenForums

I would start with this helpful tutorial on troubleshooting internet connection in Windows 7: Internet Troubleshooting Guide

Let us know if that helps at all.

Thanks for the info. I'll let you know if it helps.

While I was looking for help online, my husband was trying to fix it himself. (He was a network analyist, so he's familiar with this stuff.) He said he thought the problem was that Windows 7 wouldn't let him change the IP address to xxx.xxx.xxx.200, like all the other computers in the house. It "insisted" on xxx.xxx.xxx.100. He was able to go into the router and change the ip address to .100, but now he's concerned when we reboot the other computers, that the other computers in the house won't be able to access the router and/or internet.

Do you know how to change the IP address in Windows 7?

Thanks for your help, and your super-quick reply!

Sure, I'm happy to help

Of all your home computers, Windows 7 is likely to be the strictest on network settings (at least in its default configuration), so reconfiguring your router may be the easiest solution. What happened after your husband changed the router settings and rebooted the other computers?

Wouldn't recommend using static Ips or DHCP reservations through the router quite yet... Instead lets get through the first steps to ensure a 'clean' troubleshooting tree.

power off windows 7 box(s)
power down modem and router/switches and or hubs - in case of daisy chaining.
leave these off for a minute or 2.
Power on the modem -- let lights cycle through (1 minute)
power on router, let lights cycle
power on windows 7 box... then check 'ipconfig /all' (your husband should be familiar with this step)

THEN... if it's still not working, we can start investigating.
