I think I'm getting somewhere. I connected to the ftp server before opening my vpn connection to my work network. As soon as I opened the VPN ftp fell over. Closing the vpn restored ftp.

This is not a problem I have ever had with XP.

Can anyone suggest a fix for this vpn/ftp clash?

You can add the ftp address to your host file.

The tracert was suposed to point those issues out for us. VPN will alter your tcp/ip properties... usually a dns server, gateway and ip address. The tracert DID resolve the addresses, thus eliminated that issue from my head. For more info I'll need the ftp site and your ipconfig /all while vpn'd... If you don't wish to provide this info to a public place, I understand.

However, it is possible that you'll never be able to ftp while vpn'd that whatever network you're vpn'd to... It's all in the settings of that vpn network.

Finally cracked it. It was a gateway issue. Switching the ip settings on my vpn connection to use the local gateway solves the problem. It seems the vpn server at work has a very restrictive firewall.

Thanks for everyone's help though, much appreciated.
