Connect two pcs with network cable

i tried to connect ma laptop and ma home pc with network cable it doesnt work. laptop running windows 7 ultimate and pc running with xp sp1. is it possible to connect???

you need a cross cable
you need to sepcify each computer with an ip add
you need to be on the same domain

default gateway shuld be same.
