offline files - .TMP files generated

    Hi there,

I have redirected "documents" folder to point our local storage.
Two windows 7 ultimate computers are connected to same location ex.: \\file-server\common-files\

When "computer1" save word, excel, or power point files in \\file-server\common-files\test\test.doc "computer2" see that file with the name like HU87GH.TMP
The file size is correct, however, the file remains unusable from computer2.

    What could be the problèm?

    Many thanks for your time.

Is the network location a NAS (synology, qnap etc) ?

I have the same problem with a Synology DS209+II and I suspect it has to do with Windows not being able to communicate properly with samba shares, even though the newest Firmware (DSM 3.0) explicitly allows you to activate "Support for Windows Offline Files".

I have the exact same problem, please advise. On our side the .tmp files is for some users the only thing left on the server share and files are gone missing if computer is reinstalled or in one scenario gets stolen. This is urgent. Could it help in some way to exclude *.tmp from being cached? It seems only office documents has this issue and I'm guessing this has something to do with the way office handles changes in documents. Please advice, we are getting scared that we have a bigger problem than we know in our enterprise. Kind regards

Hi ! I have to explain this further, the problem explained by "mrawd" is nearly the same as our problem except this is on the users home folder so its really a question about one computer and not two. Computers have been connected to the network on regular basis and the documents looks fine in the offline cache, locally but on the server they were never completely saved. In one example the users laptop got stolen and when she logs in to her new computer she can only see about 50 tmp files named ~WRD1617.tmp if it's a wordfile, pptB1F2.tmp if it's a powerpoint document (numbers vary) and those are fragments of the files she had been working on the last month. I would assume that the users had loads of conflicts in synccenter. We have noticed that not until the conflicts are solved in synccenter is the file completely copied over to the server share. One could think that this is a solution - just make sure all the users solve their conflicts daily and you will be fine but I think that there must be more to expect from offline files added to the fact that we have 12 000 users so It's kinda hard to get the information thru to everyone. There can't be as many as 50 conflicts of documents that the users worked with in the office. It would be ok of course if the last changes made offline did'nt replicate and was lost but nearly all documents? That's just not satisfying. Lately we have had a lot of these issues, especially since our users can trigger a reinstall by themselves. It is always office documents (powerpoint, excel, word) that's lost and always leaves a tmp-file in the home folder on the server share. The server is Windows Server 2003 R2 and we use Office 2003. I had a case at Microsoft and they felt the solution was to solve the conflicts.. Me on the other hand think that we could tweak/chanhe the setup for this function somehow to make it more reliable, I'm just not sure where to begin. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Hello again,

The issue was resolved by changing network equippment!
Test was made on network cables, switches and routers and conclusion was that cables quality was really bad, network switches troughput was not sufficient. After switches and cables were changed suddenly network performance grow up and tmp files dissapeared/changed to their normal names once user computer started automatic "my documents synchronisation".

    Switches before: dlink
    switches after: cisco

    cables before: cat 5
    cables after: cat 6

To bring this thread back from the dead. I am having the same problems with our Win 7 Office 2003 Toshiba laptops at work that are connecting over Wireless-n. Would disabling sync center and offline files be the best bet for this. The users that use the laptops are students so the fix for fixing sync center every time they log in would not work since their accounts don’t have privileges.

    Folder Marked For Indexing

Have you checked if the shared folder on the server is marked for indexing. I have encountered similar issues with synchronizing to folders that are indexed.

Im looking at getting rid of sync center all together. Is there a way to do this? When the account syncs it tries to sync all the local profiles on the computer which is anywhere from 2-30 accounts, instead of just syncing the current logged in profile.
