Issues with internet & wireless on an HP laptop w/Vista

Ok I've had a real issue with getting the internet to work back on my uncles HP compaq laptop.

At first I was able to get on the internet via hardline, but no wireless. The wireless was not enabled at the time, but I have done so since. There was also a button on the laptop itself that tells if the wireless is connected which I made sure was blue (enabled)

But for some reason it cant get past the final step of connecting to the internet whether hardline or wireless now.

I was using a linksys router, but even just jacked into the regular cable modem with a hardline I wasnt getting any internet?

But it showed me connected & enabled in the bottom right hand corner?

I'm at a loss, I dont know what else to do.

Have you tried updating the wireless card drivers?

You can go into Device Manager, right-click on the card, and select Update Driver Software.

Alternatively, you can use this free program to check for you: Driver Easy - Free Driver Detect & Download Software

I cant even get on the internet with a hardline right from the main modem any more? I was able to the other day at another house, but now it wont connect via wireless or hardline, with or with out the addtional linksys router?

He thought at one point he had a virus, his internet was working fine one day, then it went to hell the next. Could his network possibly of been attacked and locked out from fully connecting? Like I said everything shows normal except for under network & sharing the internet icon has a big red X on the line of the diagram showing the network-internet connection?

Can you try a System Restore to get back to a point before the troubles?

If you feel he might have a virus, I strongly recommend running a scan with Malwarebytes.

I did a system restore, but it only took me back to the 8th of this month... hopefully that is good.

I was able to connect with a hardline to the main modem to try & set up the initial dsl, but we couldnt get past the login/password info today, so hopefully tomorrow or the next day.
