Local printer connection via ethernet TCP/IP

    Hi

I am trying to set up a HP LaserJet 5000GN printer with a direct wired ethernet connection to my Samsung R519 laptop running Windows 7.

The printer is checked as compatible with Windows 7 (32 bit), I have the recommended HP Universal Driver installed and the TCP/IP port and printer TCP/IP address set up. The LAN network device is enabled. I did notice that Windows could not detect the printer during the set up routine however.

When I try to print, the document spools OK in the print queue and the port address is shown however after about a minute, a printing error is shown.

What am I doing wrong? This arrangement worked fine on my old laptop running Windows XP.

    Regards

So your printer is plugged in via ethernet directly to your computer? so you have 2 nics?
Or is the printer plugged in to the router/switch via ethernet?

    Hi Brady

Yes, I have both a wireless and wired network adaptor.

Connecting local printer via ethernet cable

    Brady

One other thing. I get an 'Unidentified network' 'No network access' message when I plug in the ethernet cable to the laptop. Any clues here?

The network adaptor is definitely enabled.

If I misread this then say so. But:

If you want to connect your printer VIA ETHERNET cable directly to your PC you need the following:
    1. Use a Cross over ethernet cable.
    2. Manaully configure your printers network settings.
    3. Manually configure your PC's network settings.

To do this and make it work reliably is a lot of work when there are many other solutions out there.
Get a Parallel to USB adapter for the printer and a usb printer cord.
