I can't turn on/off firewall on my vista machine. thats why I can't access said machine from my Windows 7 machine. see link

Do you have "file and printer sharing" enabled in the network settings dialog on both machines?

Can you see file shares on both machines?

Are you using Homegroup or Workgroup sharing?
