Can't use remote desktop connection - Need help

Update: it's 1AM and I found the solution. In the router settings I had to go to Advanced Settings->NAT->Special applications
1. Enable special applications
2. Select the remote computer from a list
3. type-in IP address and the port for remote desktop connection 3389
that's it.

1. i'm set to home network (why work network when these computers are at my home?).
2. Why is it important to remove IPv6? Without it I can't use Homegroup media sharing.
3. Security check - pass.
4. Everything else is good except for remote desktop. Yesterday it worked now I lost it again.
it must be something with the router settings... I've deleted the settings in NAT and rewrote them but I'm not able to use remote anymore.

Yesterday I was able to run the network test, not anymore:

Well, I am on a week off and didn't have anything going on for a couple of days...

It's not about where the computers are... it's about the manner in which they communicate with one another. If all your computers were on Win7 and you were only sharing the public folder you could use Home Network in your workplace... (Yeah, I know... they named it stupidly)

I wouldn't use that anyway... The last thing I want is that disastrous Windows Media Player crawling around my network and messing with my files. You simply would not believe the mess it made of a 6000 file "Top Hits" collection that took me over a year to build.

In any case... it's that way just to get you started. You can change things later, one at a time, to get it working the way you want.

Ok... do a hard reset on your router... go through the process from the beginning, one more time, set things up EXACTLY as I've detailed... try it again.

Those settings were taken directly from my own system... I know they work.

Things are going worse, now I can't access the remote computer. I get an error message 0x80070035 the network path is not found. What?!?! :/

I'm that close to buy a Mac! :)

I think that we need to go two steps backwards since I would like to be able to connect to the remote computer on my wireless network. I'm able to see it in the network area, I'm able to ping it by name and by IP but I still get this message!
Netbios over IP is enabled on both. firewalls have nothing to do with since I was able to connect before all that.
The related services are up and running.
What gives?

Ok... Gil... I don't mean to be harsh with you, but it's becomming apparent you aren't following the steps... I can't help you if you don't follow instructions... At this rate, you're heading for a clean reinstall just to undo the random guesswork you're tossing at those systems... Really... follow the procedure I set out and it should work! It works on my LAN with 8 machines and 3 different OSs...

In plain english... Screw "Home Network", it's a disaster, just look at all the people having problems with it... Media sharing (WMP style) is also a flaming disaster as WMP goes out on the network looking for meta tags, images and a whole bunch of other crap to imbed in your media files, making a real mess of things as it goes. And I think you're seeing the results of Remote Desktop, which tries to use ipv6 when Homegroups are on with a router that doesn't understand it....

I did set my network to WORK NETWORK.
I can't connect my remote computer by cables to the router though.

Heyhey.... not sure if this is still a problem for the original poster but since I managed to solve the exact same problem after reading this post and some more fooling around I thought it better to let anyone else with the problem know how.
On one of the pc I was running 2.4ghz wlan and the other was connecting through 5ghz so I switched both to 2.4ghz and BAM! it all hooked up. Hope it helps someone.....

Thanks for the reply Kellogsx, but I use 2.4ghz wlan and the other computer uses a usb dongle, which is defiantly not 5ghz, so I don't know if it helps. but thanks anyway.
