See shared folder from XP pc but not Win 7

    Hi all

I have just upgraded to Win 7 from Vista and have a shared network folder set up on the PC.

Now that I have upgraded I can still see the shared folder from my other PC (XP) on the network but not from my now Win 7 PC which is where the folder actually is!

I have searched for files in the shared folder but comes up with nothing.

Anyone else have this issue...know a fix?

    Many thanks

If you are running homegroup you need to change it. Homegroup is for win 7 machines only and it uses IPv6. For networks with mixed environments workgroup is a better alternative. to test for yourself create a new network connection using workgroup and if it works disable Ipv6 and kill homegroup

Let us know if you need help

You have too add permissions, Add Everyone to the folder permissions in shared (advanced) and it will be seen via XP. I have a laptop in XP and PC is 7 and i sharing with no probs at all.

    Thanks guys

mrdemon, its not permissions as it's on the Win 7 machine that I can't see it, and that's the PC that the folder is actually on...I just can't find it.

More basic version...I have just upgraded to Win 7 from Vista and have a shared folder on my now Win 7 PC but I can't find it...where is it? My other PC on the network can see it.

Now, I have just accessed the folder from my other PC and all of a sudden it now shows up in my Network on my Win 7 PC...very strange weird happenings!

My question still is though, where it is? On my hard drive I mean.

It may be hidden, One click in the wrong place and its gone. Goto where u thought it was and click on "Organise" then Folder and search options then the view tab, Unhide the 3 boxes and U should see it.

    Hope this helps.

Can you access it by it's UNC name?

Open any explorer window in the address bar (not the search bar) type the share name in the form of

    \\<computername>\<sharename>

For example: My machine is named Amps and I have a share named music...

If I type in \\amps\music it will open the share for me...

Also you should be able to see and edit your shares in FSMGMT.MSC ... Hold the Windows key down and type an R... in the run dialog type FSMGMT.MSC and click OK. This will show you the shares and their local paths... But a word of caution... don't edit any share with a $ at the end... those are administrative, needed by windows.

Right, thanks again for all the above answers but here's the deal....

If I access the folder from my XP machine, the machine which the folder is not actually resident, then it finally shows up in my Win 7 machine under Win Explorer/Network

Until I access it though from the XP machine, it does not show on my Win 7 machine... surely that's a big big big bug?
