We were just talking about this in my Networking Theory class. PPTP and L2TP are two different protocols, either of which could be used for a VPN. I was given to understand that you used one or the other, but not both at the same time.

i see, but will i be able to open both listening port? or 1 at a time? will it cause conflict?

you can allow traffic (read: open listening ports) for both L2TP and PPTP.

off the top of my head, you need:
TCP 1723
Protocol 47

UDP 1701
UDP 500


PS: You may well need Protocol 50 (for IPSec ESP)

If you set up the VPN using the default GUI all those ports would be automatically opened up for you. There is no reason to set up a VPN manually, the built in GUI works perfectly and is by far the easiest way.

you will use outgoing bandwidth, yes. if that's what you mean
