Hello, I have a big doubt :sarc:... Does Home Group needs Windows Firewall service to be running???

The thing that i dont remember well is that when I used home group features when i installed Win7 for the first i think that i tweaked services and turned Windows Firewall service off and still able to use Home Groups, but now that i reinstalled Win7 and tried to disable the Windows Firewall, i cant get HomeGroup to work!!!, and thats because "HomeGroup Listener" service cannot start if Windows Firewall is not started...

PD: i have Norton Internet Security 2010 as a 3rd party firewall!

thnx in advnce :)

Lose Norton ... it's far too system invasive and most often is the cause of problems just like you are having... It's probably Norton's own firewall that is blocking the homenetwork.

Out of the box and with default Windows Firewall settings on/off, HomeGroup should still work; no tinkering with the firewall should be necessary.

i had a similar problem (with windows firewall ON actually) have you tried running the Homefroup troubleshooter? that sorted it out for me, and started the relevant services

i've just tried disabling Windows Firewall on my dads laptop (w/ win7 of course) and i get the same behavior.. i cant start HomeGroup listener service without the Windows Firewall service, and he doesnt use NORTON, he uses Eset Smart Security...

btw, already tried Home group troubleshooter and also tried disabling norton's firewall and also disabling windows firewall, but didnt work

It's weird that the Dependencies of the Homegroup listener service is only the "Server" service, but it seems that in my case is also Windows Firewall service

just a thought, you may be on the right lines with the firewall thing, alot of firewalls have IPv6 off by default, have you checked the firewall settings for an "enable IPv6" option?

edit: i just turned windows firewall off... homegroup is still working flawlessly for me, so i think we can rule that out

I'm checking norton configuration and theres a setting called "Learn Automatic IPv6 NAT Traversal Traffic" and is turned on

edit: i think that i've found the answer... in my first win7 installation i set up homegroups before installing NIS and without tweaking any services (so Windows Firewall was still turned on) and after doing all the setup i tweaked services and i turned off firewall... Now, i tried to join homegroup with Windows Firewall on, and it joined correctly and i can share correctly, and after that i turned off Windows firewall and it is still working :D!!!
