Suddenly cannot map drive over VPN - any clues please??

Hi, this is my first post and I would be so grateful for any advice.

    I have windows 7.
I can VPN to our office ok, I can RDP to any of our servers ok, I can open outlook and it connects across to the exchange server ok BUT I cannot map a drive to any of the servers (Windows cannot access \\xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx\myshare - error 0x80070035).

I have various VPN's to various customers and all are now failing in the same way.

Everything was working fine - I could connect to any network and map to drives, but suddently it all stopped working. This happened to me back in January and I ended up rebuilding the machine and that fixed the problem. Now it has gone again and I really do not want to have to rebuild the machine again - there has to be a reason.

    Thanking you for any assistance.

    The observations where as follows:
    1. The host pc is picked up on the comp
    2. When selected it produced the following error: 0x80070035 network path not found
    3. I tried various options such as ticking the TCP/IP and enabling all the possible options available under network connections properties.
    4. This still produced the error although the host computer is pinged

    The solution was simple:
    I was running NORTON 360.
Under firewall settings; disable personal firewall.
Once this is done, access is allowed to the host pc.
You can then set your permissions, create network paths and map network drives like you would normally do.

Hi, thank you for the advice. I have already tried disabling the firewall and anti-virus software but the problem is still there.

You will have better luck if you uninstall the A/V and firewall completely. :)

    Test this:

I had two Windows 7 machines, A & B. A could see B and share files well. B could see A but when I'd click on its icon I would get the 0x80070035 path not found error.

I could ping A from B via IP address but not name, so my gut feeling told me this was a DNS problem.

I used Start > Notepad. On the results, right click Notepad and "Run as administrator". Open C:\Windows7 (or whatever your root is)\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts

In the file, toward the bottom, add a line with the IP address and name of the machine you are trying to reach. For example, 192.180.0.123 MachineName leaving at least one space between the number and name. Save the file then close Notepad.

I then Windows+R and CMD. ipconfig /release followed by ipconfig /renew. Then ping MachineName and you should see it work. Open Windows Explorer and you'll now have access to your other machine's files.

I can't explain technically what is happening. It appears that the part of Windows that should be updating the hosts file is not. If you do it manually it works. Remember, you have to open Notepad as an Administrator or you can't save the file.

Hi, thank you for the info. Unfortunately this still does not work. It is really strange - I can ping the server, take remote control of the server (RDC), connect outlook to exchange on the server - but I cannot map a drive. Tried two other VPN's and different servers - exactly the same issue. Thanks

hztm2, open your server's firewall configuration - look for "File and printer sharing" rule that's applied to the network interface (watch the profile), make sure it's not limited to "Local subnet".

Hi, thanks - I am using the inbuilt firewall and it all appears to be correct. I also still get the problem if I disable the whole firewall. I think I am going to have to rebuild the machine - Thanks

No I hate rebuilding - I have found various other posts on the web about this which seem to relate to Windows 7 beta and RC. I am going to log this with Microsoft tomorrow.
