    Unable to enter Modem Setup

    I use D-Link G604T ADSL-Modem/WiFi Router.

Since I've been using Win7 Ultimate 64bits, I no longer can access the Router's setup page, no matter what browser I try (IE 8.0.7600, Firefox 3.6.3, Chrome 4.1.249, Opera 10.51), with the msg:

    401 Unauthorized

Authorization required for the URL '/'.

I'm forced to reboot from WinXP's partition to access, using IE (none of the other browsers did). Running WinXP I'm able to get into the Modem's setup, like I always did.

    Whasup?

Are you entering http://192.168.1.1 or the equivelant?

401 usually means that you are beyond the login page without having logged in.

    Meaning? Translation, please

(after a firmware update, for using ADSL+ [ANNEX_A] 8Mbps, the Modem's IP was factory changed to 192.168.254.254; the one I had no problems, using WinXP)

    Run cmd

    Type IPCONFIG

    What is your default gateway?

Whatever it is, type it into your browser address bar after http://

    http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

Your DSL model of D-link G604T uses 192.168.1.1 as the default gateway, therefore to access the routers set up page you would need to use that IP. Just type it in the URL, you will see that you can now access the set up page.

It even says so on the support page for your exact model of router.

    Upgrade procedure

WARNING: DO NOT upgrade the firmware over a wireless connection. Doing so could damage the DSL modem.

Your current settings will be lost after upgrading.

Step 1 Please visit http://support.dlink.com/products/view.asp?productid=DSL-G604T#firm and download the latest version of firmware. After the file downloads do not open it as it will not work.

Step 2 Open a web browser and type the IP address of the DSL modem in the address bar (default is 192.168.1.1). Press Enter.

Step 3 The default username and password are admin (all lower case). Click OK.

Step 4 Click the Tools tab at the top and then click Firmware on the left side.

Step 5 Click Browse and navigate to the file you downloaded in step 1. Select the file by left-clicking it once and then click Open.

Step 6 Click Apply. It will take a few seconds for the upgrade to complete.

NOTE: Do not reboot the DSL modem during this procedure.

Step 7 After the router reboots, close your web browser and reopen it. Repeat steps 2-3 to login and access the Firmware page again.

The firmware version should reflect the new version. If the firmware version didn't change repeat steps 5 and 6.

If you have problems accessing the web-based configuration, unplug the power to the DSL modem, wait 10 seconds, and plug back in. Repeat steps 2 and 3.

If this doesn't work, perform a hard reset. To perform a hard reset, insert a paperclip and into the hole above the word RESET, for about 10 seconds and then release. Wait for the lights to stabilize (stop blinking) and then repeat steps 2 and 3.

If you still can't access the set up page try the steps below.

    Cannot access configuration

If you are unable to connect to the web-based configuration, follow the steps below:

    • Verify physical connectivity by checking for solid link lights on the Ethernet ports of the device. If you do not get a solid link light, try using a different cable or connect to a different port on the device if possible. If the computer is turned off, the link light may not be on. Status light should be flashing.

    • Disable any Internet security software running on the computer. Software firewalls like Zone Alarm, Black Ice, Sygate, Norton Personal Firewall, etc. might block access to the configuration pages. Check the help files included with your firewall software for more information on disabling or configuring it.

    • Configure your Internet settings:

Step 1 Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel.

Step 2 Double-click the Internet Options Icon.

Step 3 On the Security tab, click to the button to restore the settings to their defaults.

Step 4 Click to the Connection tab and set the dial-up option to Never Dial a Connection.

Step 5 Click the LAN Settings button. Nothing should be checked. Click OK.

Step 6 Click the Advanced tab and then click the button to restore the settings to their defaults. Click OK.

    • Check your IP address. Your computer must have an IP address in the same range of the device you are attempting to configure.

If you are still unable to access the web-based configuration you may need to reset it to defaults or reload firmware.

Nope, Chev65, this model's current IP is 192.168.254.254 (my Default Gateway), factory changed after a firmware update, I did jul/2009, for using ADSL+ @ 8Mbps. As you can check at D-Link Brasil Firmware Update ReadMe (in Portuguese, tough), for my local ADSL service (Telemar - Velox).

And I've been using this IP ever since.

Only when I installed Win7, I found myself unable to use this IP

Typing 192.168.1.1, as suggested, redirects to http://aviso.veloxzone.com.br and a page with a huge msg It Works! in bold letters, and nothing else.

Booting from WinXP I can enter the modem, using 192.168.254.254, as expected

Strangely, there's no Gateway at 'Network', but 'Several Networks'; listed: 'Local Network', 'VMware Network Adapter VMnet1' and 'VMware Network Adapter VMnet8' (for using Ubuntu with VMware; and I also have WinXP Virtual Machine; none are running at this moment)

    'Show Full Map', shows nothing

But: only recently, I installed VMware, and this problem precedes this installation, from Win7 day One.

ps: '401' means "Toto, I've a feeling we're not in Kansas any more" ?

401 is more akin to "I am in Kansas, but no one checked my passport."
