cant share files with xp machine hey,
i have a laptop runnign windows 7 ultimate which is connected to a home network through a wireless router.
i have another xp machine connected thorugh a cable to that same router.
the xp machine can find the Windows 7 laptop just by type \\(name) and the "run" prompt line.
but the laptop machine cant.
i researched all the availabe forums and cant find a solution to the problem.

For a mixed OP system network do not use the Home network location. Use the Work network location if you have an XP machine in your network.
Go through this tutorial about sharing with XP, click on the XP tab, it should help. Sharing files and printers with different versions of Windows - Help & How-to - Microsoft Windows
This one is more general but has good info. Networking home computers running different versions of Windows
After going through all of that if you are still having file access problems try doing this registry adjustment on the Win 7 machine with the problem.
Solution is really easy just modify one key in registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System
create or modify 32-bit DWORD: LocalAccountTokenFilterPolicy
set the value to: 1 | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Home built OS Windows 7 Ult, Windows 8 Pro, CPU Q9650-4.275GHz, E8600 4.5GHz, E6750-3.8GHz Motherboard Evga 780i FTW Memory G.Skill PC2 9600 1200Mhz 5 5 5 15 2T Graphics Card GTX480 Sound Card Asus Xonar D2 Monitor(s) Displays HannsG Screen Resolution 1680X1050 Keyboard Logitech G15 Mouse Logitech G9 PSU ThermalTake Toughpower 1000Watt modular Case ThermalTake XaserV Cooling Xigmatek S1283 Hard Drives GSkill Phoenix Pro 120GB SSD Internet Speed T1 |

Unfortunately there is no quick or easy answer.
Also try static IP's and put each user on each machine being sure the passwords match. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Alinor Engineering OS Win7 32 / 64 and XP 32 / 64 (on various other computers as well) CPU Intel 920's @ 3.6 and 4.0 GHz Motherboard Asus P6T Memory 3Gb / 6Gb Graphics Card ATI 4850 / ATI 4970 Sound Card onboard Monitor(s) Displays 24 / 27" Keyboard Logitech G15 Mouse Logitech Performance MX PSU PC Power & Cooling 1K Case Antec 900 (modded) Cooling air / Danger Den water Hard Drives SSD, 1Tb WD

oren You should check the time/date on both machines to make sure they match up. If you have an A/V software or a third party firewall installed those can easily be causing these types of problems. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Home built OS Windows 7 Ult, Windows 8 Pro, CPU Q9650-4.275GHz, E8600 4.5GHz, E6750-3.8GHz Motherboard Evga 780i FTW Memory G.Skill PC2 9600 1200Mhz 5 5 5 15 2T Graphics Card GTX480 Sound Card Asus Xonar D2 Monitor(s) Displays HannsG Screen Resolution 1680X1050 Keyboard Logitech G15 Mouse Logitech G9 PSU ThermalTake Toughpower 1000Watt modular Case ThermalTake XaserV Cooling Xigmatek S1283 Hard Drives GSkill Phoenix Pro 120GB SSD Internet Speed T1 |

Most of which I have been posting here with great success for over 16 months. Unfortunately when people install antivirus software's or third party firewalls all quick and easy answers that usually work do not work any longer. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Home built OS Windows 7 Ult, Windows 8 Pro, CPU Q9650-4.275GHz, E8600 4.5GHz, E6750-3.8GHz Motherboard Evga 780i FTW Memory G.Skill PC2 9600 1200Mhz 5 5 5 15 2T Graphics Card GTX480 Sound Card Asus Xonar D2 Monitor(s) Displays HannsG Screen Resolution 1680X1050 Keyboard Logitech G15 Mouse Logitech G9 PSU ThermalTake Toughpower 1000Watt modular Case ThermalTake XaserV Cooling Xigmatek S1283 Hard Drives GSkill Phoenix Pro 120GB SSD Internet Speed T1 |

As you can tell, Chev is a Windows 7 cheerleader, I am a skeptic.
You did try mapping a drive using the IP address you can ping?
Does your XP machine have a logon pass running?
You said you tried static IP's
Did you at any time turn on Windows 7 Homenetworking or only use workgroups? | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Alinor Engineering OS Win7 32 / 64 and XP 32 / 64 (on various other computers as well) CPU Intel 920's @ 3.6 and 4.0 GHz Motherboard Asus P6T Memory 3Gb / 6Gb Graphics Card ATI 4850 / ATI 4970 Sound Card onboard Monitor(s) Displays 24 / 27" Keyboard Logitech G15 Mouse Logitech Performance MX PSU PC Power & Cooling 1K Case Antec 900 (modded) Cooling air / Danger Den water Hard Drives SSD, 1Tb WD
