Can't connect to internet

Hey guys,

I used to use a ethernet cable for my connection, but I recently moved and now I have to use wireless. The problem is that I can't connect to anything. It says that there is a wireless connection, but I'm not connected. I am trying to use the wireless card built in to my motherboard (P5K-E), which I think is listed as Realtek RTL8187 Wireless 802.11b/g, but windows keeps trying to connect to a network using 'WAN Miniport (PPPOE)...'. It just sits there for 10 sec and then says error 651.

I'm very new to windows 7. Any help would be great.

Also, I'm not sure what to put in the user name and password fields when connecting.

You need to download the latest drivers for your chipset/wireless setup and then use that connection to connect to your network.

If you don't know what the model of your Wireless LAN device is, download Speccy and use it to find out what model wireless lan you have.

Realtek.com.tw

Once you've downloaded the proper drivers you can open the network and sharing center.

Control Panel (All Items) > Network & Sharing Center > Change Adapter Settings > Right Click the "Real" Wireless device and use it to connect.

There is also a wizard you can use on the initial Network & Sharing Center page.

Hey.

I think that All my drivers are up to date. When I go in to the network connections page, I see 3 connections. First is 'broadband connection' which uses the old WAN Miniport (PPPOE),the second is called 'wireless network connection' which uses the realtek rtl8187 card, and the third is disabled. I can cancel the broadband connection as the default, but I can't set the wireless network connection as default.

I can't connect on my desktop, so I'm doing all this from my iPod touch.

The 'wireless network connection' has the green bars, but says not connected. Right clicking is and hitting connect brings up the small box which says Not Connected, connections are available. The only connectionon that list is the broadband connection. When I try to use that , it brings up a login page (which I'm not sure what tpmput in there), I hit connect, and it says connecting throgh wan miniport still. Grrrrr

Sorry about my lack of know-how with windows 7. I just really need the Internet to get back to work.

If that's a TLDR, to paraphrase my problem, no matter which connection I try to use, it always uses the wrong network adapter. The wrong one is listed as 'Microsoft virtual wifi miniport adapter' in Device manager. The right one is the realtek I mentioned. I guess I need to change the priority of devices used?

I may be completely missing something here but...

What do you have for Internet, Cable or DSL?

PPPoE is an authentication service required for connecting to some DSL providers. If you're using a cable Internet provider or a DSL provider who has moved beyond PPPoE, you shouldn't be trying to connect that way. Forgive me if you've already mentioned which but I've looked over your original post as well as your following ones and I can't decipher which connection type you're using. If you're not sure, you can either call your ISP to find out, or just name which ISP you have. Let's see if my memories still serve me well as to which ISP uses which protocol

My ISP is sympatico, which I think is dsl.

Sympatico does indeed use PPPoE. Ok a couple of more questions and we should be able to get it functioning correctly.

I'm assuming you're using a wireless router? Is it a third-party device, or are you using a modem/router combo box from Sympatico?

If you are using your own router and connecting it to Bell's modem, you'll need to go into the settings of your router and configure it for PPPoE. The router should be making that connection, not your computer.

If it's a Bell router/modem combo box, you still don't need to connect using PPPoE. So in the end, you don't need that type of connection at all. Regardless of how you're set up. The router (whether third-party or integrated) should handle the type of connection to Sympatico. You merely need to connect to the router.

If you need more details on how to do that, I'm sure myself or someone else can help you with that :) But for starters, the PPPoE connection is completely unnecessary. You can either remove it or disable it.

It may help to go into the Windows control panel and remove or delate the old entries in your Windows credential manager list. Control panel>Use large icons> credential manager... Then delate old entries that relate to your old broadband connection. You might have better luck connecting to your wireless network after that.

Yeah I believe that the box we are using is the combo from Bell. Ièm at my old residence right now downloading some drivers to give it another try.

im having the same problem. i had internet on my 3 wireless comps for 6 months and then they were gone. i just did 1 rebuild for my kids and i cant get it to go onto the internet. it will connect to my network but that is it. i put win 7 64 bit on the new build.which drivers should i be looking for? if that is the problem?
