    PS3 causes VLC to crash

I have a PS3 and a PC connected on a network. The PC is connected to a TV in the lounge room, and the PS3 is connected to another TV in another room.

Both devices are connected to a D-LINK DIR-655 router via D-LINK DGS1016D gigabit switch. All cables are cat6, and all NIC on PS is gigabit.

There is a server which is used as a file store.

When watching a movie from the server on the PC in the lounge room, if the PS3 is turned on the VLC media player, or Windows Media Player will crash. If the PS3 is turned of, VLC and WMP play the movie without problems. If I copy the file to the PC and watch from there it plays fine.

I used to have a netgear WNR3500 router, and the problem existed then too.

I tried different ports on switch but it made no difference.

Any ideas what might be going on?

Are there any tools I can use the analyse the traffic and see what is happening?

    Thanks

When you say crash, are you referring to the "XXXX has stopped working" dialog box that appears?

What software are you using on the file server to share media?

It sounds like there is a conflict with the PS3 taking precidence in terms of access to the "common ground".

Not "the program has stopped working" error. Movies or shows that are playing, stutter, stop, then a few seconds later VLC pops up an error dialog with several repeated errors saying it cannot read from the source file. Can be anything, recorded tv, movies, video clips, anything..

No software. I have set up several mapped drives. One is called "movies" and all my TV shows and movies are stored there. The server is running XP. The client PCs are running Windows 7.

This isn;t a QoS issue with the router - it started long before I turned QoS on. So I don't know whats giving the PS3 precendence. Likewise, there are no application rules in the router for the PS3 either.

What software do you use to stream to your PS3? I don't think Windows XP by default has a DLNA protocol for the PS3 to understand.

Found the problem... IP address conflict. When I set up the DHCP reservations I had the PS3 on 192.168.1.9 and the PC on the same address.

Interestingly, Windows which usually detects ip address conflicts, did not detect it this time, no matter what combination I turned the devices on.

Coz Windows didn't complain about a conflict, it didn't occur to me to check for it.

    thanks for your help.
