Can't enable wireless adapter

I recently bought a TP-Link wn353gd wireless adapter. Windows 7 recognizes it automatically as a realtek 8185 extensible wireless device. However, after the installation completed, I found out that the wireless device appears as "disabled". I clicked "enable" a prompt appeared saying that it was enabling the device, then finish... and the wireless adapter was still disabled.

I tried downloading the Windows 7 drivers from the realtek site, using the vista drivers from the TP-Link cd... nothing. The wireless card is there, I just can't get it to enable.

I did notice that both connection utilities (realtek's and TP-Link's) showed the wireless adapter as disabled, and kept flashing constantly, as if they were being updated.

What can I do?

Thanks in advance.

It's a desktop, running an ASRock P43Twins1600 motherboard and windows 7 ultimate. I keep it fairly updated. Is there anything else I should post about the machine/OS that might help?

Um, no, didn't work, either. I even tried changing the slot, just in case, but still the wireless adapter shows as "disabled" and there's no way to enable it.
Is there some way in windows to force the system to turn on the network interface for that adapter?, sort of like a force-enable?
