    Windows 7 Server

I'm trying to set up a computer at home in a way that while I'm away from home, I can connect to my home computer's internet connection. Basically I'd like to connect my laptop to my home connection in areas where internet is not available.

I'm not sure what solution I'm looking for here or if Windows 7 Server could achieve this, so I'm really just asking for any and all insight into what can be done. Is a VPN appropriate in this case? Someone suggested OpenSSH and PuTTY, but I am unfamiliar with both of these programs.

I am a bit confused. You are saying you want to connect to your home computer via laptop if the internet is down. If it is down at home then you would not be able to connect to your home computer, and if the internet was down where your laptop is you still would not be able to connect to your home system.

If you are saying you just need to connect to your home machine from your laptop via internet then you can set up your machine at home to accept RDP connections, set the firewall on your router to accept RDP connections (open port 3389), and then use something like http://www.dyndns.com/ so your machine will have a way to access it if your ISP uses DHCP (most do).

Am I on the right track??

Hi thanks for the reply. I was a bit confused when this was described to me as well as a buddy of mine is asking if this is possible and if so, if I could help him with it.

He wants to be able to use his internet connection from home while he is away from home. Now that I'm typing it, it seems rather impossible. There's no way that he could use his internet connection from home while away from home is there?

Other than a very long Ethernet cable

You would probably be better looking at a USB 3G modem solution to access the net, as this uses the mobile phone network, and is therefore available in most locations these days

What about using his ISP while he is connected to the internet away from home? I think he is basically trying to avoid firewalls while he is using internet from WiFi spots/hotels. I guess some of the sites he is trying to access is being blocked.

Only way I can think of if he does not have an internet connection while away from home is to install a modem in his machine and use the modem in the laptop to connect to the modem at home. This will be costly (i.e. long distance phone charges) and will be painfully slow.

It would be cheaper to get a Verizon wireless card for the laptop and have internet wherever cell service is.

Awesome! This seems like what he is looking for. Is this difficult to set-up? Would you mind walking me through the process?
