xp machine not vsible form W7 machine

    Hello,

I regularly encounter the same problem that i can not access or see a XP machine from my W7 machine I could see before in my network. The strange thing is that remote desktop still works. The other way around stll works: I can see the W7 macine on my xp machine.
The only solution I can use to fix the problem is to do a system-repair.
At first this issue appeared after updating ms defender definitions. But yesterday it appeared just after a new startup without any update or change of settings on anything.

I'm completely dazzled about the cause of this problem.
I would like to know the real issue so i can use a proper fix instead of doing a system-repair every now and then.

    any suggestions?

couple of quick questions if I may,

1, is the Windows 7 machine assigned to a static IP on your router?
    2. what is the IP of the Windows 7 machine? you can find this by opening command prompt and typing ipconfig /all if your behind a router it will probably look like 192.168.1.x
    3. Have you actually shared any folders on the win 7 machine?
    4. do you have password protected sharing OFF (this can be configured from network and sharing centre>turn off password protected sharing

    1 I think so
2 it is 192.168.2.5 for a long time now (xp machine is 192.168.2.8)
3 no, but that is not necessary because it is about accessing the XP machine which is used as a download machine. So i need access to see a move or listen to music that is on the xp machine.
4 not relevant either, see answer by 3. (still looked it up, answer is yes it is OFF)

do you know what.... i completely misread that, i thought it was XP couldnt see Win 7 (which is the usual thing)

it sounds like the machines can see each other, as otherwise the XP machine wouldnt be able to see 7, and remote desktop wouldn't work so hopefully the problem is cosmetic

ok make sure the folder is shared on the XP machine, then try this: (in this example im going to say that your sharing a folder called Music, obviously it will be whatever the folders actually called)

on the Win 7 machine, open a windows explorer window, and type \\192.168.2.8\Music into the folder path bar at the top if that works then create a shortcut on your desktop with the same path, that should give you permanent access,

I did a systemrepair, so i can not try this now, because it will work now.

In my windows-explorer I have a permanent connection (z-drive) to my shared folder on the XP machine. This works fine to access the movies and music on this machine.

But as i wrote the issue appears every now and then. When it does and i click the z drive i get the message the location is not connected.
Clicking the network in explorer shows me my own machine and another W7 machine from my son, but the xp machine is not visible. Connection from the other w7 machine to the xp is still fine.
In that position I tried several things to solve the problem on my W7 machine. Nothing works except a system-repair.

Iv just been put onto something by another thread, by an OP having an almost identical problem to yours, he installed this onto the XP machine: Download details: Link Layer Topology Discovery (LLTD) Responder (KB922120) and it seemed to fix it

That worked for me also way back. I think it might have been Chev's suggestion to me.

I think that hot fix is supposed to allow the XP machines with sp3 to show up on the network map. But it may have en effect on the XP machines showing up on the network shares also so maybe the LLTD hotfix allows the machine to be discovered more easily.

The link to the tuturial by Redbird is below but you need XP sp3 for this to work. To get the hotfix you have to give your email and pass the Windows genuine advantage validation.

XP Computers in the Windows 7 Network Map

A/V's and third party firewalls are also famous for blocking XP machines from the network.

When I had Vista and XP machines in my network I would first create a workgroup on my Windows 7 machine and then set permissions for Everyone. Then I would join the workgroup which I created on the Win 7 machine from the XP and Vista machines and always always run the Network Setup Wizard on the XP and Vista machines and then add "Everyone" to the permissions on the XP and Vista machines, it always worked for me.

Looks like now we need to start telling everyone who can't see the XP machine to install SP3 and the LLTD hotfix even though it's only supposed to allow XP machines to be seen in the network map.

The strange thing is that I never installed the LLTD hot fix but I could always see my XP machines.

He guys thank you for your help, but you all seem to miss something I wrote.
I see the XP machine right now because I did a system repair yesterday on the W7 machine.
The thing is that it might work well today and that I can not see the XP machine tomorrow.
If that happens I fix it on the W7 by doing another system repair (back to the situation from yesterday).
So, the problem is in the W7 machine and not in the XP, right?

I tried to install the LLTD but get an initializing error (0xc0000135) .
