Desktop FTP Client - Map Network Drive

Here is a simple tutorial on how to create your very own Desktop FTP Client using the "Map Network Drive" in "My Computer" that will allow full access to your hosting account instead of using cPanel 11 or simular. You can also drag/drop all your files/folders straight into your "Public_HTML" folder without any issues.

I can assure you this is very secure and being a web developer I use this method of access constantly, this is a known method throughout the development world and most of the developers I know use this method because of it's simplicity and ease of access making life so much easier.

If you have problems creating your own desktop access leave a post here and I'll try my best to help.

    Desktop FTP Client

    1. From the desktop, click on "Start" then right click on "My Computer".
    2. Click on "Map Network Drive".
    3. From the screen, click "Connect to a Web site that you can use to store your documents and pictures", and then click Next.
    4. Click "Choose a custom network location", and then click Next.
    5. Enter the following into the Internet or network address field:

Example: ftp://ftp.yourdomain.com <-- Must be exact

    6. Enter your FTP username and account password when prompted.

    Example

    Username: 123abc
    password xyz321

Once you have done the above you can access your ftp for your domain in "My Computer" at the very bottom of page or simply drag it to your desktop for easier access.

Then all you do is drag/drop your files/folders that you want to upload onto your hosting/server on My Computer or Desktop and it will upload them for you.

If you have any problems don't hesitate to contact me in this thread where i will try and assist you in creating your "Desktop FTP Client".

Using this method is just as secure as using your own cPanel or Plesk (Any FTP Client) security.

Hope this little tutorial helps someone out there. Goodluck

Creating my own Desktop FTP Client using Map Network Drive - a glitch

    Greetings,

Q1: The tutorial was very informative and it worked very well; however, I had to restore my Windows to a previous restore point which took out my FTP Client. I figured I could merely repeat the process, but I get a message that <something ... I don't remember> cannot be accessed. It did create the client, but none of my files were in the client folder. I found the Login As property and applied my username and password, but that still did not work. Any suggestions?

Q2: On another note, I also (at first) successfully assigned a "Favorite" to that network drive, but then the favorite went away (to favorite Heaven, I suppose). I tried to create it again, and this time it gave the name (2) - like it was a copy of the first. Then that went away. I looked to see if my Windows Explorer option for show hidden files was turned on, and it was, so the original must exist somewhere - but darned if I know where!?!

If a choice between which question to answer, question 1 is more important to me.

Thanks for the tutorial - it was great while it lasted.

I resolved question 1 (but not question 2)

I must have inserted a space after I gave the domain name:

    ie: ftp:// mydomain name

    instead of the correct way

    ie: ftp://mydomain name

It just worked for me. :) sorry for the false alarm
