    No Internet Access

OK - How I got to where I am:

    (1) Using Acronis, I imaged my Vista 64 SP1 install to a new/clean partition on a separate drive, and set the system up for dual boot. Verified both work normally.

    (2) Upgraded one of the images to Win 1 build 7100, as requested by MSFT in the MSDN blog. No other settings have been sullied with, except as detailed below:

    (3) Now: The Vista 64 install is working as it as been: I can see the rest of the computers in the house, access the Internet, etc etc etc...

    (4) Win 7: *Very* limited access - I can use Ventrilo (a VOIP program) to reach out on the internet to communicate to other people. So I know the internet is "there". But no browsers or other programs appear to work.

    (5) So I tried the obvious and disabled the Firewall completely to see if it was a setting issue. No Joy - Same issue as before

    (6) Win 7's troubleshooting says the Internet is there, but that a remote device is refusing the connection. So I called my ISP on the theory that they may have flagged my Win 7 install as not authorized on their network. But no.

    (7) A little browsing says there may be an issue with now IPv6 is working, so I disabled that - No Joy. Currently re-enabled.

    (8) Enabling and disabling Homegroup has no effect, either.

    (9) The Troubleshooting details tell me "Primary DNS Server is not set up to accept connections on port 'Domain'." And the DNS server is not available.

Obviously, something is mis-configured, but for the life of me I haven't been able to figure out what that something is. Hell, It's probably been staring me in the face the whole time...

can you see if your router is pulling an ip from the modem? What model router are you using?

just fyi, shouldnt have to call isp to verify any install of any OS... my isp used to want to verify mac addresses, still do, just a different way now... but you had to manually register the mac with the isp thru a webpage was all. Was a pain switching out the headend router. but anyways....

another FYI, since having problems, or them being found with acronis and win7, this could be an issue to check after you have gone thru the HW troubleshoot

I can definitely see, access, and manage my router: Release the connection and get a new one, etc etc.. - It's on the IP 198.162.0.1 It's a D-Link router, if I recall correctly (at work ATM). The 7 machine is physically plugged into the router.

My Vista 64 install and the other computers in the house (a Mac, the printer, etc etc) still access the internet normally. i.e. while my 7 install does not access, I can simply walk into the other room and access the web from the Mac. So I know the router is getting the needed addresses/access to my ISP. I called them because of the "remote device is refusing connection", and with the rest of the house working normally I thought it might be the ISP flagging the computer as not authorized. As you suggest, that was definitely not the problem, and while I had them on the phone they verified they can see the modem and router from their end.

And from Win 7, I can use Ventrilo to talk to people over the web. So I'm sure it's there. But there's apparently some mis-configuration with the 'Domain' which is preventing DHCP information from being exchanged.

It was suggested elsewhere that I might be able to skip the router's DHCP and go for my ISP's DHCP server directly, but... didn't make sense to me because the rest of the house works.

try reinstalling network adapters with reboot after uinstall and another after install. also double check services, longshot but make sure any ip ranges on that router is not filtered in any way

I ended up "solving" the problem with a new/clean install. I'm convinced there is/was som issue with internal permissions, rather than some hardware fault... Just that I'm not knowledgeable enough with Win 7 to have figured it out. Some of the guys on Technet weren't much more - though they did get me a little further.

One good nugget that came out of their efforts:

The following seemed to have solved the problem on Build 7000,

Windows Vista and later use randomised identifiers for IPv6 addresses.
You can configure this from the command line with the following command:

netsh interface ipv6 set global randomizeidentifiers

Or to switch it off (as it should be)

netsh interface ipv6 set global randomizeidentifiers=disabled

( makes the NIC get an autoconfigured IPv6 address that conforms to RFC 2464, as Mac OS X, Linux, Solaris and *BSDs do.)

A3R0 760, make sure that in whatever browser you are using, that no proxy is set, as opposed to auto-detect. Can you access Google using this ip address? 64.233.161.104
