disable system tray balloon "cannot connect to drive"

    Hello and good day!

I have a Network Access Server (NAS) which I use solely to store files. I don't necessarily use this drive each time I boot Windows 7 (Ultimate), but I have several folders mapped ([U:] \Lan_Drive\<user name>; [M:] \Lan_Drive\Music; [P:] \Lan_Drive\Pictures) as drives.

In order to save some electricity (and I would think, drive life, too) My NAS will put the drives to sleep if they have not been accessed in longer than 90 minutes.

So, what happens is that when I boot into Windows 7, I get a little balloon pop-up out of the system tray to notify me that these drives, which I have maped to a network folder, cannot be mounted, presumably because the NAS is in sleep mode. As soon as I open Windows Explorer and access the drives, the NAS "wakes up" and I can browse the contents of the drives/folders.

What I would like to do is disable this balloon pop-up warning.

    Thank you for your thoughts.

    Best regards,

    hi boggsie,welcome to SF
    I suggest this

To disable balloon tips, do the following:

    1. Download DisableBalloonTips.zip (< 1 KB)
    2. Extract the zip file
    3. Double click on DisableBalloonTips.reg
    4. When prompted, click Yes

To enable balloon tips again, just follow the steps above and replace step 4 by double clicking on ReEnableBalloonTips.reg

    cheers

Thank you for your thoughtful reply.

Before I go the route of turning off all balloon tips, I wonder if perhaps there isn't a way to target only the one specific network share ?

I ask, because, while I appreciate the information, I wonder if there isn't something a less-advanced Windows 7 user, such as myself, might miss by globally turning off balloons?

    Best regards,

I'm not sure about just turning off one balloon message, maybe you can post that question here,
Notifications - Enable or Disable Message Balloons

If you want to just disable that icon, you can try this tutorial,
System Icons - Enable or Disable
Method two, and select the appropriate .reg file.

OK, now I get it ... thank you so much for the follow-up, Derekimo. It helped me to further understand the context of the reply from kucking13.

When I disable the balloon notification, the icon will still appear, so I don't completely miss notifications, only ones that are associated with balloons ... the system tray icon still shows up.

Thank you ... this will work just great!
