    slow wifi on windows-7

    hi, i was trying to download a large file in firefox but it said it was getting 5.5 kb/s with 8 days, 12 hours left to go.
    i stuck a usb harddrive and restarted the pc to start xbmc/ debian linux and using wget i get this speed:
    Code:
    Saving to: `battlefield2demo.exe'

    35% [==============================>                                                          ] 200,602,424  637K/s  eta 16m 2s
    what would be the cause for the discrepancy.

    Networking protocol in win 7. I suspect you are running "homegroup" which sometimes can have connectivity issues on some systems

    I suggest to test you create a new connection using "workgroup" instead. If the problem disappears you can disable IPv6 and kill homegroup

    Let us know if you need help

    ^ thanks zigzag, i ran windows-update and reinstalled the ralink driver. the problem still persisted but magically after a few hours i was getting better throughput. (seems like a sporadic issue)

    can you tell me how to disable homegroup ?
    i have been clicking on the 3 green bars on the bottom right to select my router's ssid; is there anything in addition i need to do ?; i am always able to connect, just sometimes slow/ intermittent.

    Go to Computer, then right click Homegroup on the left hand bar/side and click Change Homegroup Settings. After click Leave the Homegroup. Now go to run and type services.msc and press the enter key. It should open a Services windows. Look for Homegroup Listener and Homegroup provider and change the startup types to Disabled.
