    Cant connect to network

i am getting super frustrated right now. let me explain

this started when i was trying to connect my computer to my xbox through WMC. simple process right? .... wrong

My computer has this compulsory issue where it can connect to a network
the error in windows media center is:
"your PC is not connected to a network. to continue setup, connect the pc to your network, then select next to try again."

after getting this i then go to network and sharing center
    if I:
1.select view network status and tasks: it tells me im am not currently connected to any network. then i select connect to a network and it says not connected... troubleshoot? if i hit trouble shoot it tells me no issues were found

    2. View network computers and devices: I get a page with all the computers connected to the network including the xbox. i am able to access my room mates shared files. but on top of hte window there is a pop down that states "this computer is not connected to a network. Click to connect... and if i click to connect i repeat step one listed above.

so i decided to give up on windows media center for now and went to Windows media player. Well i cant turn on media sharing because my computer cant connect to a network

But i do have internet. right now my computer is plugged into my AT&T U-verse wireless router via Ethernet cable. I recently left my homegroup for a couple reasons:

    1. Even though i could see my room mates comps and xbox, i got a pop down message that said i was not connected to a network. even though i could open their shared files etc.

    2. I couldnt get media sharing to work

I left the group to see if i could creat a proper one. now when i go to home group i simply get the error that im not connected to a network. ive read for hours windows troubleshooting pages, searched google countless times for numerous things ranging from "xbox cant connect to media center" to "Windows 7 cant find network". i have called AT&T, Microsoft, posted on [H]ardforum, networkign forum and here and still have received no answer. i really dont want to have to pay microsoft 60 dollars to tell me how to fix this...

    PLEASE help

    EDIT:
if i try to set up a network my computer cant find any wireless routers. why does my computer not recognize the at&T router as a router?

Homegroup is primarily for win 7 only machines. On mixed networks "workgroup" is sometimes more stable.

You can verify it for yourself by setting up a new network using workgroup. If it works (and it should) you can then disable IPv and kill homegroup.

Let us know if you need help setting that up

I'm having the same problem as well and can't find the problem anywhere.

I thought it was caused by a problem with the connection and University as there was an outage a few weeks back, so I connected my Ethernet cable to my second Ethernet port, and reactivated my machine on the network, but still no-go.

Using MSE and Windows firewall. I've tried disabling both, and still nothing. Tried various settings in the firewall and nothing. Re-installed NIC drivers, and tried various other settings and still nothing. Annoying, as now I can't connect through LAN to friends in my Uni dorm floor.

Completely uninstall Norton using the Norton uninstaller. Just disabling it will not work. For the time being download and install MSE and turn on Windows Firewall.

Every anti-virus program has its strengths and weaknesses. No one program catches everything. MSE is certainly on par with Symantec. A plus is that MSE is a Microsoft product and will not have a problem with your Windows 7 OS.
