Have you tried using the 54GB option in the settings for that adaptor? The reviews aren't too good but it might work. It's only a 15 dollar adaptor so don't expect too much from it.

Of course there are plenty of USB wireless adaptors that work fine with Windows 7.

I should say the recertified ones are 15 dollars, the new ones are much more expensive. The reviews on them are not so good. I'm not too sure how to make the adjustment but that was the only info I could find on it.

I'm sorry I was looking at the refurbished ones at Newegg for 15 bucks which seems like a good deal, but the reviews were not so good for that adaptor. There were lots of reviews talking about having strange connection problems but nobody mentioned any clear resolution to the problem.

If you are running an Anti Virus or third party firewall you may want to consider uninstalling it for now because they have been causing lots of connection problems with Windows 7 lately.

Okay this weird thing happened, we tried redownloading the setup file loads of times through the wireless network but it just wouldn't install, so we took my computer downstairs and connected it to the wired net and downloaded the setup with that and it worked fine! it was so weird. but we still can't see the network. :/

So you are online with the problem adaptor but you can't see the network?

Did you set up a Workgroup or Homegroup?

If you aren't seeing the network then check to make sure that network discovery is turned on in Advanced Sharing settings.

After checking that try this registry adjustment on the problem Win 7 machine.

Solution is really easy just modify one key in registry:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System
create or modify 32-bit DWORD: LocalAccountTokenFilterPolicy
    set the value to: 1

Apparently the issue is that my Orange Livebox router doesn't work with N routers... so I guess I will have to make do with a slow connection with a G adapter.....
