I'm trying to fix a friends internet connection. Hi,
I have a friends acer laptop that I'm trying to fix the internet connection on. It is connected to the internet but I can't get online in IE8! I have connected to my wireless network fine and I installed MS Secutity Essentials via usb. I was able to download the updates for Security Essentials from the internet and did a quick scan (no threats found).
I tried installing MS Office 2010 beta but it said it couldn't get online to download the files needed for installation.
When I open IE8 it just says 'Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage'
What can I do to try and fix this?
Thanks,
Duncan | My System Specs |

Hi Duncan, have you setup an internet connection. Even if you haven't some things can still connect to the internet to do updates. Right click on the Network icon in the system tray, and then attempt to setup a connection using either local or wireless connection. Hope this helps. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number HP Pavilion a4302f OS Win 7 Pro x64, VM Win XP, Win7 Pro Sandbox, Kubuntu 11 CPU AMD Athlon(tm) II X4 640 @ 3.0 Gbz Memory 12GB 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2x4GB, 2x2GB Graphics Card ATI Radeon HD 4350 HD Graphics/Audio with 512MB Sound Card Realtek High Definition Audio Monitor(s) Displays 1. Thanks Lee,
I have already done that and the wireless connection is enabled and showing as connected in Network and Sharing Center. Also my wireless network has no security on it so that should not be a problem. And as I said Security Essentials was able to access the internet to download updates.

Thanks A Guy, I have already tried installing FF and that wouldn't connect either and neither will action center to check for solutions.
I don't know if this has anything to do with it but when I turn the machine on I get this message...
any ideas?

Thanks electrotune1200 and Tews I have tried both of your procedures but unfortunately neither of them worked. Also thank you mitchell65 I downloaded the fixit program and ran it on the laptop but it didn't resolve the problem either. The runtime error message I posted earlier is one I'm getting as I start win 7 so not sure if it is directly related to IE.
here is a capture of the wireless network connection status... so you can see the internet is working but I can't connect with IE, FF, Action center or Office Beta install. But Security Essentials was able to download it's updates. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Home Built December 09 OS Windows 7 x64 Ultimate CPU Core i7 860 Motherboard Asus p7p55d Memory Corsair Dominator 1600MHz Graphics Card GeForce 8600GT Monitor(s) Displays Xerox Screen Resolution 1280*1024 Keyboard Trust Mouse Logitech Mx1000 PSU Corsair 550W Case Coolermaster CM 690 Hard Drives wextern digital caviar green 500GB 32Mb Cashe |

Hello,
You can try this. Run an elevated command prompt, type in the command sfc /scannow and hit enter. Let the scan complete and see if this resolves the issue.
Secondly, If the sfc /scannow fails to find any errors, maybe try running a repair install with your Windows disc.
Are you getting the runtime error on every boot? | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Toshiba P300 OS Windows 8 Pro CPU Intel Centrino Dual Core P7450 2.13GHz Memory 4gb Graphics Card ATI Mobility Raedon HD3650 Hard Drives Toshiba MK3252GSX ATA Internet Speed Wish it were faster I'm trying to fix a friends internet connection. problems?
