    Windows 7 won't connect to internet...again 64bit


    Got a new laptop a couple of months ago, Dell Inspiron 1545 w/ Windows 7 64bit. Internet worked for a few days but randomly stopped working, I don't remember how I got it to start working again but it did. Just yesterday it stopped connecting to the internet again. I have looked this up and have tried numerous times to fix it with no solution. Anyone want to help me please!

    EDIT: I don't know if this helps, but I cannot even get into my router. Whenever I go into cmd and type ipconfig it just says media disconnected or something like that. I also only allowed windows programs on startup, so it's not a program issue I think. My router is WRT54G. I'm using my moms laptop running XP just to post this thread, so it's obviously not the wireless.

    There is about 15 different versions of the WRT54G, some work better than others with Windows 7. Wireless 64 bit with that router can be a pain.

    Your best is to update the firmware on your router. You need to make extra sure you are using the correct firmware for your router version.

    The media disconnected message when you do an ipconfig is standard, mine says that also and it means nothing.

    Like it does not give me my IP Address, Gateway, etc.

    My router is WRT54GS v7.0, but whenever I type in my default gateway it takes me to my Speedstream thing or whatever. So I'm confused.

    In your case I would say call your ISP for the correct procedure for setting up your modem first. You need to plug in the modem and then wait for it to boot up completely before plugging in the router. After that follow the set up procedure for your router. You can't just plug them all in at the same time and expect everything to work.

    This certainly isn't a Windows 7 problem although for your router to work with Windows 7 it may require a firmware update. You need to be connected with a wired eithernet connection in order to update the firmware.

    The firmware for your WRT54GS version 7 can be downloaded from the link below. Click on "downloads" then choose the hardware version number. The most recent firmware for your routers hardware version is dated 3/1/10, so you will want to update your firmware once you are able to access your routers set up page.

    Well that certainly will eliminate the variables.

    I think I might have started by just replacing the modem first but I understand your frustration, sometimes it's easier to just start fresh and upgrade old hardware with better hardware and newer features.

    Be sure and get one with wireless N and gigabyte speeds. If your going to upgrade you might as well get the features that you didn't have with your WRT54GS.

    If you are still having problems after that a clean install of Windows 7 will probably fix it.

    Well linksys was screwing up anyway and they wanted $30 for them to come out and fix it, so my mom was pissed and pretty much said screw you to linksys and we just bout a two in one modem/router through speedstream ha. But it works now so this is fixed.

    As I mentioned before, those routers can go either way. In most cases a firmware update or using the correct configuration can fix them but it should be automatic when using DHCP and often times that isn't the case.
