    Folder Sharing Problem XP/7

Me again! Problems with getting into shared folders on my Win 7 pc

Have managed to set up sharing between two pcs, one Win 7 other XP.

Win 7 can see and access all the folders (and now the printer too thanks to your help) on the XP pc - great!

However although the XP pc can see the networked Win 7 folders, when I open the default folder (which incidentally is greyed out) all the sub folders show as empty. Any ideas please?

Also does anyone know if I can network a Canon LiDE 90 scanner which is currently wired to XP pc to my Win 7?

    Many thanks

I can only hope that you set up a workgroup and not a Homegroup for sharing because Homegroups are only made for Windows 7 machines.

I'm not sure what you mean by the default folder?

    Yes definitely set up Workgroup.

When I go into the XP pc > My Network Places > Users on Maureen - pc (this is my Win 7) > Two sub folders show named

    Default (greyed out)
    Public

Both of these contain sub folders from my Win 7 but when I click on them they are empty.

    Any ideas?

    Thank you for the link.

Had already followed this tutorial but have just tried again and set up a new shared folder to make sure all correct. Can access all the XP files on Windows 7 but on the XP it is saying 'access denied contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions'.

Any idea where I go from here?

There is a registry key that sometimes need an adjustment on the Windows 7 machine, try this first. This is to fix the access denied error.

For the access denied error try adjusing this registry key on the Win 7 machine with the problem.

Solution is really easy just modify one key in registry: You need to type regedit into your command prompt to access the registry. Navigate to the following key and make the following adjustment.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System
create or modify 32-bit DWORD: LocalAccountTokenFilterPolicy
    set the value to: 1

Also has worked for me here.

You may also need to disable "Simple file sharing" on the XP machine, with XP this option can cause problems with sharing. Try this second.

To turn off simple file sharing on XP.

    Here's How:
    1. Open My Computer from the Start Menu or Windows XP Desktop. A new My Computer window will appear.
    2. Open the Tools menu and choose the "Folder Options..." option from this menu. A new Folder Options window will appear.
    3. Click on the View tab and locate the "Use Simple File Sharing (Recommended)" checkbox in the list of Advanced Settings.
    4. To enable Simple File Sharing, ensure this checkbox is checked. To disable Simple File Sharing, ensure this checkbox is not checked. Click inside the checkbox to alternately enable and disable the option.

Have you tried disabling Password protected sharing in Windows 7? step 2b here: https://www.sevenforums.com/779715-post1.html

ONLY do this if you trust all the machines on your network

You will probably need to navigate to the designated registry key on the Win 7 machine and create the 32bit dword called LocalAccountTokenFilterPolicy then change the value to 1.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System
create or modify 32-bit DWORD: After hitting create type into box, LocalAccountTokenFilterPolicy then hit save and then set the value to 1.

This works because it disables UAC for local administrator group on the network. So disabling UAC on the Windows 7 machine might also work.

You can read about this problem in the link below.

    Yes it works.
