Neighbours can see pc and internet contents with network discovery off

Hi everyone, i have no idea how this is happening, i am using windows 7 home premium 64bit, i went through all the start up setup that windows ask you to do under first install. I have virgin media 50mbs cable internet connected through modem then router to wired LAN on desktop, network wizard was not required to be run to connect to the internet as i am using a dynamic ip address, this was also confirmed by the it support at virgin media. The pc is at home so i setup the network as a home private network and turned off network discovery set up a homegroup, disabled file sharing media streaming under admin account, but still the neighbours could see whatever i was viewing on my pc connecting through the internet, remote desktop connection was also disabled.
Have changed my network location to public to remove any chance of network discovery and file sharing but under advanced settings i still see network discovery and file sharing is still set as on so stopped this under admin settings but this needs doing everytime i start up the pc, it does not save the settings. Firewall i am using is zone alarm pro, set the network as trusted still had the same problems, set the network as public still the same, set the pc protection as high so nobody can connect to me on the network in both public and network connections and yet still the neighbours can still see what i am viewing on the pc internet connection.
I just dont understand what i have done wrong to be able to correct the problem so i really need some advice as to what i should do if i have done everything that the pc has asked me to do when i first ran the pc how can the security be breached for the content to be viewable?

    In desperate need of help

"neighbours could see whatever i was viewing on my pc connecting through the internet" ???
What do you mean? They're running remote connection SW/ Or are sniffing your network? Or what? Plse describe exactly what they do in order to "see what you are viewing"

What make of router is this? Is this a wireless router? Do you have any security settings enabled on the router and if so what are they?

    Hi richlust,

Why would you think that your neighbors can access your network?

To secure your wireless home network please do the following if you have not done it yet or have missed out something:

Change your router's Login credentials and not the default one.

Make sure to change your SSID(wireless network name) immediately, usually it's the router's name think of something unique or silly.

Secure your network with WPA2 Security and apply the new security to all computers in your network with the correct passphrase.

You should be fine if above suggestions has been done.

This si where i have the problem as i dont know how they are getting on it, so this is why its a grey area and after doing a reinstall of windows7 there is still the same problem from boot up. 1 thing i was thinking was that as i had set the network to private home network, with network discovery on that my pc was visible to them the moment i was connected to the internet, i always disabled network discovery but had to do it everytime i started my pc, even created a homegroup and disabled all the file sharing, network discovery etc. The internet connection is not shared only need wireless for occasion alptop use, womans ipod. Was having the same problem even when i did not connect through my router just connected straight from my modem to the pc, they can even view what i am seeing on my laptop which is connected wireless. I have cahnged the SSID and log on credentials to the router, enabled wpa2 the router is a TP link n wireless router, it generated a random security phrase for the wireless connection and even says it is secured via wpa2 security. But i used to set up both connections as home private networks and i wonder if this was how my pc is being discovered, it is as if i am broadcasting to them but i have not set up anything like this for them. Have even logged onto BIOS and disabled something called virtual monitor management not sure if this had anything to do with it. At the moment as i do not need to file share i have set the connection to public so that file sharing is never the case but when i check the advanced sharing settings i see that network discovery and file sharing is still turned on and needs disabling everytime i shut down and start up the pc. I have created a standard and admin accounts, renamed the pc renamed the workgroup, when i look at the action centre everything says i is ok and i am protected.

I noticed that when you click the icon on networking where you can merge or delete networks it said the connection was an unmanaged connection, i did not have to enter any pass codes to get onto the internet on my desktop pc, windows 7 did this all for me is this a security issue? the internet connection is a dynamic ip address from virgin. This is the motherboard i am using Asus M4A89GTD PRO/USB3 AM3,DDR3,CFire,SATA3,GBLan,ATX, it is setup to use a Realtek gigabyte LAN

When you say "apply the new security to all computers in your network with the correct passphrase" i have never entered a passhphrase to connect to the internet on my desktop pc, should i be using the pppoe with the routers SSID and WPA2 security phrase? Will this create a managed connection?

The passphrase or network key can be found in your router's setting if your wireless network is secured. The same Security (WEP, WPA, or WPA2) with the network key will have to apply to all your computers that are connected to your wireless network.

Thanks 2xg i will go over these details when i get back home, much appreciated, i had noticed when i do log on to my connection wirelessly i get an unidentified network as well as the network i am logging onto, maybe this will cure this problem. Will post back tomorrow with the results :)
As for when i am connecting to my desktop via a wired connection ( no wireless card for desktop pc ) is there anything i need to do to make sure it is secure, i checked the forums on virgin media and all it says is if it says you are connected wired and you can open different web pages then there is nothing more that is needed to be done, but is this connection secure without any encryption. The router has got a firewall and it is enabled, i have disabled the layer, pptp and icmp connection as i dont use them. As i said it seems like my pc is broadcasting to the neighbours pcs but i dont understand why the firewall does not stop it, not sure what i am doing wrong there

Thin walls my friend, they must be very christian and must not agree with porn, let alone the webcams with the russian lesbians and the strapons Can hear them commenting on what i am viewing . Do allot of gaming online and bought a kickass surround sound system and i could also hear them complaing about that to and quote "may as well listen to it as i can see what he is doing". To be honest mate it absoloutely baffles me as to how they are viewing it in the first place, surely if you followed the guide from start up there would be nothing that could go wrong but something has somewhere, clearly something i have not done to complete the setup. Thats why i am asking the experts, cant solve this one on my own and all help is appreicated highly, really need to get this problem solved asap

i have found the problem it was down to the remote desktop services, i noticed when i did a fresh install that under system and remote settings remote connections was allowed and also in the advanced tab for it, I went into services to disable remote desktop services auto connection manager etc, only 2 things i cant disable are the RPC connections but i also notice everytime i restart my pc the remote desktop services do not stay disabled and are set to automatic again allowing my neighbours to reconnect to my pc, i dont understand how this is happening. Does anyone know how i can permanently disable remote desktop services as i will never need it, i looked at this regedit suggestion but it did not work http://www.windows-commandline.com/2...mand-line.html. Is there any other solution i can try please anyone

    Complete reinstall of OS

Hi everyone, just have a few questions i wonder if anyone can help me with i had some problems with my pc security and i posted here

I think i found the problem and i noticed that when i did a full reinstall and wipe the hard drive that in system under remote settings, remote connections was allowed and under the advanced tab allow other people to remotely control my computer was ticked, i checked the task manager and remote registry and remote desktop services were all set to automatic and were running so i stopped the services but the remote desktop service would not disable hence the complete reinstall.

The tabs were ticked under the remote settings and in the advanced tab too so disabled them and also in services too and now they remain disabled and i only use a standard account with an admin account instead of just an admin so i have some control over it. Are the remote settings tab supposed to be ticked upon fresh start up from scratch. What i am wondering is when you do a fresh install what else do you have to do to the pc to make it secure? Should the pc be secure upon a hard drive rewrite and fresh install should it be secure? I connect onto the internet via dynamic ip and virgin media internet which does not require a log on or using the network connection wizard. I have installed avg antivirus and spybot search and destroy with windows firewall.

I have not been shown how to setup a pc i am just guessing which is bad i know but should everything be setup good to go with an installation from disk? I have updated all the drivers too from the manufacturers websites.

In the resources monitor i noticed there was a dll file running under COM SURROGATE and this stopped everytime i checked the resources monitor, googled it and this can be viruses unless starting from system 32 files i have read does this sound like a problem too, have run virus scan and spybot no problems have come up.
