Windows7 and xp networking problem

for some I can only pick up my local area connection, my dsl is not showing up and I'm having problems connecting to my xp machine. I have tried all sorts of things and still can't get it to work properly. Can some1 plzz help me.

Tough to answer this w/o you filling in specs on your main rig, we have no idea what kind of network cards/wireless/router ability you have since you've not listed anything, the XP PC info would be handy as well.
