network and internet connection -Not at the same time.

Scenario: 5 computers -wired lan with static IP addresses. New computer with Win7 Professional. The issue lies when the connection is made to the internet via modem on the switch. Network dissapears until I disconnect from the dsl connection. I have read alot of information trying to resolve this, but nothing is successful. I lost my go-to computer tech when I had questions, and this the set-up is not as easy as XP. Thanks

    You loose all 5 machines?

The switch and the modem are one in the same? If yes I assume that it is a switch/router?

I loose connection to all 5 when I access the online connection yes. The modem is directly connected to the switch. I can't have an internet and local connection at the same time with the new computer.

    Ok.

here is how your network should look:

Internet >> Modem >> Router With Switch >> Computers

as you are describing it your network goes:

    Internet >> Modem >> Switch >> Computers

which cannot be done unless you are running a layer 3 switch (which basically a switch with routing capabilities).

There is also one other way.

Internet >> modem >> PC acting as router >> Switch >> computers.

My guess is if you dont have a router in there some where then the last config is the one you have set. With out actually seeing everything it is pretty hard to tell.

No one computer is an ICS host. Our internet connection is WANMiniport (PPPOE). All XP computers are set the same, and this has not been an issue in our communication within our setup. My thinking is there is a small setting buried somewhere that I am missing
