Printer Sharing Windows 7 RC 64 to Vista 32

    I downloaded Windows 7 RC 64 Bit Build:7100.0.090421-1700 x64.

After I installed it, I only had to install my wireless network drivers and Windows 7 downloaded the rest of all of my system. I did not have to install any driver at all.

My problem is when I try to print from my Vista 32 laptop nothing prints to my printer. Under active documents listed for my printer it just says under status | Error - Printing.

Under the ports tab on my Vista 32 laptop, the check is in the box \\[Windows 7 64]\[printer] | Local Port

Under the ports tab on my Window 7 64 Desktop, the check is in the box USB001 | Virtual printer port for USB

The 64 bit drivers for my printer are on the Windows 7 64 Desktop and the 32 bit drivers are on the Vista 32 laptop.

I do not know why I cannot share printing.

On Windows 7 64, share this printer is checked and Render print jobs on client computers is checked.

I know this seems to be a much talked about problem but I tried the best I could to follow the posted suggestions.

My Desktop has a Canon iP4600 printer.
My desktop's computer name is AGP-001 and the printer share name is CanoniP4.

are your PCs in a homegroup? or did you manually share out the printers?

Windows 7 is in a homegroup but I do not know how to tell if Vista is in a homegroup. I am relatively new to Windows Vista/7. How would I be able to find out?
All of the network settings were the default settings for both computers except that I manually put the local port for my printer on my Vista 32 laptop when my desktop OS was still Windows XP. I got the Vista OS because it came on the laptop when I purchased it about a few months ago.

sorry i misread - if you have Vista, then homegroup can't really help you.
OK, i assume you know that when you share your printer (without homegroup) you need permissions for it to be printed from another PC.

on Windows 7, check this.. start menu | devices and printers | right click on printer icon | printer properties | select the "security" tab

make sure "everyone" is listed there, if not, click add, type in "everyone" (no quotes) and hit OK, then hit OK again.

next, go to control panel | network and internet | network and sharing center | on the left side, look for "change advanced sharing settings"

under "home or work" which should be your current profile (if not, fix that), and ensure that network discovery is on, file and printer sharing is on, scroll down to the 2nd last entry, and turn OFF password protected sharing.

note that this will allow ANYONE on your home network to print to your windows 7 connected printer.

ok, now see if the Vista machine can print.

If this fails, i'm blaming the printer driver :)

Thank you for the help, jkkw. Unfortunately I had already tried that. Everything that was suggested was already implemented because I think it is the default setting, except the password which I turned off before I even posted my dilemma. I am still trying to find a solution so if anybody else has any other ideas, I'm all ears. :)

I have a new interesting dilemma that still goes with the same problem. I was able to printer share form my old Gateway laptop with Windows XP 32 Bit and it printed with no problem.

I didn't change any settings or even install the printer drivers on the Gateway. It is set as an auto printer. I also tried, as someone on another thread called it "poodle faking", making my Vista 32 add a new printer and made it a local and selected add port and set the port to \\AGP-001\CanoniP4 and it said access denied but don't forget that the Gateway, which I did nothing to it, allowed me to print.

    Hi there
If you got access denied then your network setup is incorrect -- your AGP-001 computer MUST be able to be seen and shared on the network.

The VISTA machine needs NETWORK DISCOVERY ON -- I've posted elsewhere that VISTA on my machine seems to re-set it to OFF again every time I re-boot.

I don't normally use VISTA so there might be an easy way to ensure Network discovery is ON after a reboot.

(Actually the "Poodle-faking" comes from an expression in the Antique furniture trade when for example a bit of "French Polishing" is done to hide a scratch etc etc.).

    Cheers

I found out that my Network Discovery settings on my Vista 32 wasn't even selected for either on or off but I selected Discovery on and the printer still won't work. I even rebooted my computer to see if the settings needed to be on with a fresh boot and the settings stayed but I still couldn't access the printer. I even uninstalled all of the Canon software from it and reinstalled it and still I get access denied.

I am so frustrated. I don't understand what the problem is.

I did notice, however, that even though the Network Discovery settings said "Custom" before I changed them to On, I was able to see my Windows 7 computer and it's printer from the network selector. Do you think it is maybe just a glich in Windows 7 RC or what else do you think it could be?

I'm not mad. I was looking for an emoticon that would show pulling out hair but they didn't have one and that was the funniest. ^-^v

Sorry to hear of your troubles, but you are not alone... :v)

I have also done all of the above, and it still will not print. So what I did was to goto Start/Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Services and restarted the Printer Spooler service... and THEN it will fire my print job just fine! As long as I do it each time that is... (Grrrrrrr)

    Printing FROM Win7RC X64 TO Win7RC X86... I haven't tried the other way yet.

My Vista X32 will print okay now, as will the Vista Home X32 box... but the win7 X64 will NOT print unless I restart the Print Spooler service.

So now I am re-installing the Win7 X32 system... with a hard drive format just to be sure...

More news as it goes along...

Looks like a fresh reinstall of Win7 X32 fixed my issues... Upgrade was how the system was first installed, then I applied the "Win7 Migration" pack that I performed prior to the upgrade.

Could have been either one of those events in my case...
