Creator of Mariposa Botnet Arrested

I suspect there will be more stories about this in the days to come, just headline information for now as this was just published minutes ago:

BREAKING NEWS

WASHINGTON — The FBI says international law enforcement authorities have arrested the computer hacker responsible for creating the malicious computer code that infected about 12 million computers and invaded major corporations worldwide.

The alleged mastermind is a 23-year-old Slovenian whose Internet nickname is Iserdo. The FBI says he was arrested in Slovenia after a lengthy investigation by police there, along with FBI and Spanish authorities.

His arrest comes about five months after Spanish police arrested three hackers in the cyber scam who operated the so-called Mariposa botnet, stealing credit cards and online banking credentials.

A botnet is a network of infected computers. The Mariposa botnet appeared in December 2008.

They will eventually end up doing to him what they do to all top hackers and virus writers, and that is give them a cushy job working for a computer security firm.

That's a chilling thought. Ironically though, the best people to instruct firms on security measures are the very same individuals who are able to breach the current ones.

I would rather have an ex-hacker be the guy making the software MORE secure than just a guy outta school...

Or some country's spy agency will hire him. At any rate I am glad he is off the streets.

I have a different way of looking at stopping future hackers. When hackers are found guilty hang them slowly. That will surly slow down others from doing such things. The ones that bought the hacker program just might decide to destroy them, after all they just convicted and hung the guy who created them.

My father and I came up with an idea for punishing hackers like this. Take them around to the houses of everyone affected by the virus/malware and let the victim(s) each take one swipe at the guy. The rules are - it must be a painful hit, and it must be non-lethal.

Or have him TEACH the user how to get RID of viruses. That would be much more frustrating.
