    Microsoft Feels "Urgency" for Tablets

    Posted: 30 Jul 2010
REDMOND, Wash. (CNNMoney.com) -- Microsoft Chief Executive Steve Ballmer said Thursday that the software giant is urgently working with its partners to unveil a host of tablet computers running Windows 7, to compete with Apple's fast-selling iPad.
At a meeting with financial analysts on Thursday, Ballmer outlined the company's strategy to catch up to Apple and Google in the consumer space. He said Apple is doing an "interesting" job with the iPad and has "sold certainly more than I'd like them to sell." As a result, Ballmer said his company's "job one urgency" is bringing Windows-based tablet computers to the market.

Seems to me that MS is playing catch-up too often these days.

This is a flawed strategy on their part, I think. The iFad doesn't run on Snow Leopard, it runs on the iPhone OS....so why the insistence that a MS tablet run on Windows 7?

The iFad is an over-sized iPod Touch with a couple other tweaks(over-simplifying, I know)....so why doesn't MS take the same approach with the Zune HD as a base to work from?

Their approach reminds me why common sense is an oxymoron.

If they include USB ports, flash, and multitasking, it will be 20x better than the iPad.

Not really. Microsoft had tablet PCs for years.

Windows has been on tablets, but they aren't the "hit" that iPad has been.

    Areas MS still tops:
    OS (Windows)
    Office productivity (Office)
    Development tools (visual studio, .NET)

    Areas Apple has:
    Phones
    MP3 players
    (now) tablets

Absolutely true. The Apple thingy is an expensive paper weight in my book. The full blown version costs over $1000 in Europe. At the end, MS will not play catch-up but come out with something that people can make use of - I hope at least.

I hope the same. I'd like to see MS jump into more areas successfully. Really hoping they do well with Win Phone 7 too.

Well, to be fair...that's kinda nothing new.

1). Pop-up blocker integrated in their browser came after others
2). Tabbed browsing in their browser came after
3). The Xbox came after Nintendo and Sony
4). The Zune came after the iPod, and many other vendors
    5). Bing came after Google.

The list kinda goes on and on.

LOL. Now if he said USB 1.1, he'd be correct. I'm still waiting to use my USB 3.0 ports...
